Pressreview- Next Stop Is Vietnam:

NEXT STOP IS VIETNAM: THE WAR ON RECORD: 1961-2008 By the time you get to Huey Lewis and the News’ “Walking on a Thin Line,” on the 10th disc of this astonishing anthology, you need a little bit of Mr. Lewis’s optimistic rasp. Even though he’s singing from a post-traumatic-stress perspective, “Taught me how to shoot to kill/A specialist with a deadly skill.” For most of the hours before that point, the mood on this collection can’t help but be somber. There’s a war going on, and it sounds like it might never end.& ,

The breadth and depth of the response of the popular music industry to battle may never top the level it reached during Vietnam, when seemingly every shift in the wind produced a spate of new songs. More than 300 selections are here — by one-off recording artists and by folk, rock, country and pop stars — including songs about shipping off to war (Johnnie Wright’s “Hello Vietnam”), questioning the draft (Phil Ochs’s “Draft Dodger Rag”), prisoners of war (Eldon Fault’s “Welcome Home P.O.W.”) and sinful behavior.& ,

There are those sung by off-duty pilots (the Merrymen’s “Saigon Girls”) and about the Kent State shootings. (The Beach Boys’ “Student Demonstration Time”) As well as snippets of political speeches and military radio broadcasts and, of course, “Give Peace a Chance”. Many of the tracks were on small labels. Probably doomed to be lost without the very heavy work of collecting and contextualizing on display here. (The accompanying book has most of the stories behind the songs, photos and essays.)& ,

It’s hard not to think of 2010 while listening to these songs. More than nine years have passed since the first strikes in Afghanistan, and more than seven since the invasion of Iraq. Apart from some Nashville jingoism and a handful of recordings by soldiers, war and its ravages feel like taboo topics.& ,

What will tomorrow’s archivists do when there’s nothing to collect? & ,

excellent

Just been listening through the 'Next Stop is Vietnam' set, while reading the book at the same time. It really is a masterpiece - I wouldn't consider listening to much of this music in it's own right (which is a shame), but the way the set is put together is excellent. I know people like Hugo Keesing and Bill Gerhart are the experts in this field and deserve immense praise, but Bear Records in producing allows the set to be available to people like me also have to be praised. Thanks

Begleitet werden die klingenden Tondokumente von einem 304-seitigen Hardcoverbuch im LP-Format. Das Ganze dürfte das wohl ausführlichste Projekt zum Thema Popmusik und Vietnam sein.

Presse - Next Stop Is Vietnam - Ken Burns’ landmark documentary THE VIETNAM WAR
"Was ergibt das?", fragte Country Joe. Der Schweiß lief ihm mittlerweile trotz seines aufgeknöpften Uniformhemds in Strömen herunter. "Fuck!", kam es zurück. "Was ergibt das?", rief Joe lauter. "FUCK!", schrien die rund 300.000 Besucher.

It was 10 months after the Tet Offensive which saw Vietcong soldiers at the door of the American embassy in Saigon and the war was at a peak. I went to Vietnam because I was curious . . . and because could. In fact, surprisingly, anyone could. Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam, was on PanAm’s regular route -- PA001 if I recall. But there was an obvious reason why most people wouldn’t want to go.

An incredible production.

Press Archive - Next Stop Is Vietnam - npr music The history of the Vietnam War has been told many times in hundreds of books, movies and plays. But Next Stop Is Vietnam explores the impact of that conflict through the popular music it inspired. In 1969, Gary Hall was an orthopedic technician at the 17th Field Hospital in An Khe, in Vietnam's Central Highlands. He saw what seemed to be an endless stream of wounded and dead, and Hall says music took him away, at least temporarily. "In An Khe, the popular song was 'Love One Another' [by] The Youngbloods," Hall says. " 'Come on people now, smile on each other, everybody get together, gonna love one another right now.' That's the one I remember really strongly." But if you ask a lot of veterans, the song that captures their feelings about Vietnam is "We Gotta Get Out of This Place," a 1960s pop hit by The Animals, which was really about young people trapped in a British urban slum.

Press Archive - Next Stop Is Vietnam - Record Collector Coincidentally, it's a 40-plus-year overview of rock'n'roll itself, spanning every genre from the expected topical folk (Seeger, Ochs, Paxton) to exploitative pop in search of a hit. Only around 40 choices were automatic, ranging from Staff Sergeant Barry Sadler's gung-ho No 1, The Ballad Of The Green Berets to Give Peace A Chance and Marvin Gaye's What's Going On. Each disc is themed: exploring early war songs, keeping the flag flying, anti-war protest, war is hell and war is over. Draft dodgers split the nation, many right-wing country songs adopting the "America: Love It Or Leave It" stance, notably Victor Lundberg's extraordinary 1968 Top 10 hit, An Open Letter To My Teenage Son, advising his son that if he burns his draft card: "From that moment on - I have no son."

Press Archive - Battleground Korea - Songs and Sounds of America’s Forgotten War - allmusic Battleground Korea, the weighty four-CD box from Bear Family, bears the subtitle "Songs and Sounds of America's Forgotten War," an assessment equal parts true and false. Compared to the wars that surrounded it -- it happened five years after World War II and ended two years prior to the escalation of military activities in Vietnam -- the Korean War doesn't occupy much space in the American popular consciousness, but it did generate two enduring works of art: The Manchurian Candidate and the 1970 feature film M*A*S*H, along with its accompanying television series. Both The Manchurian Candidate and M*A*S*H were written after the conclusion of the Korean War, but the recordings on Battleground Korea -- mainly music, but there is also a wealth of newsreel footage -- differ because they were produced during the war. These aren't reflections, they're documents of how the country felt as the battle raged.

The award-winning folks at Bear Family Records have assembled an impressive four-CD anthology that is part ’50s American soundtrack and part historical document, representing the most comprehensive examination ever assembled of songs inspired by the Korean War. While the music of the World War II and Vietnam War eras garnered a lot of attention, far less is known about the sounds of the Korea War period, even though it stands as a significant time in American society, from the post-WWII boom years to dawning of the ’60s.

Press Archive - Battleground Korea - Songs and Sounds of America’s Forgotten War - Los Angeles Times Print Edition World War II produced its own trove of hit songs, including "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree (With Anyone Else but Me)," "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" and "I'll Be Home for Christmas." And who can think of the Vietnam War without summoning memories of Barry Sadler's "The Ballad of the Green Berets," Pete Seeger's "Waist Deep in the Big Muddy," the Doors' apocalyptic "The End" or Country Joe & the Fish's "I Feel Like I'm Fixin' to Die Rag." The Korean War, however, is something of an anomaly in that regard, one that is addressed in an expansive new four-CD box set, "Battleground Korea: Songs and Sounds of America's Forgotten War," just released by the wondrously obsessive German label Bear Family Records. About three years ago —long before Donald Trump was considered a serious candidate for president and well before his Twitter war with current North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un propelled the country back onto center stage of world affairs — coproducers Bill Geerhart and Hugo Keesing went to work on culling music of the Korean conflict.

Press Archive - Battleground Korea - Songs and Sounds of America’s Forgotten War - musoscribe The hardcover book features several in-depth essays that help place the Korean War in context, as well as set the scene for music’s relationship with the war. Detailed biographical and background essays are provided for every recording, and – since the subject matter is at the heart of the collection – printed lyrics are provided for all of the songs. The book also features a staggering collection of photos – quite a few in color – that provide added dimension to the narrative. As historical releases go, Battleground Korea establishes a nearly impossibly high standard. For those interested in digging into the Korean War from a rarely-approached historical angle, this boxed set is just the ticket. Recalling George Santayana’s aphorism about not learning the lessons of the past, and with the Korean peninsula (and the American government’s perspective on it) currently back in the news, there’s no better time.
