Day For Decision

Johnny Sea

Almost a year after Eve Of Destruction ushered in a new kind of protest song it was still creating a musical backlash. Johnny Sea's Day For Decision, a lengthy recitation with a chorus singing America The Beautiful in the background, is one such response. Saying that "America's real trouble doesn't lie in the rice paddies of Vietnam," but in the fact that "old fashioned love of God, country, and family is passé," the song urges its listeners to lift their heads to the flag and sing.

Born John Allan Seay, Jr. in Gulfport, Mississippi on July 15, 1940, Sea's first recording contract was with the NRC label before he became Mercury/Philips’ answer to Johnny Cash. In 1966, his new manager, Gene Nash, moved him from Philips to Warner Bros., and scheduled a session at RCA’s Nashville studio. “I showed up, and Gene met me at the door,” Johnny told Colin Escott. “We’d already planned the songs we were gonna cut, but he handed me these lyrics and said, 'Get in a room and start reading. I’m going to round up the instruments we need.’ We were in the studio from early afternoon until early morning. We left and went to breakfast.” They’d just cut Day for Decision, a very popular recitation by a Nashville-area morning dee-jay, Allen Norman (Peltier).

It was released on May 13, 1966, and crashed the charts four weeks later, despite its forbidding length. Sales quickly topped a quarter-million. “There’s a lot of concern out there over the God-Is-Dead talk and general disrespect for authority,” said Peltier at the time. Many stations played the song repeatedly. In addition to hitting #14 (Country) and #35 (Pop), the song was nominated for a Grammy in the 'spoken word' category. After one more label change to Columbia, Sea retired from the music scene and went back to being a cowboy and crop-duster pilot. His legacy includes eight charted singles and six albums.
