Various - That'll Flat Git It: Vol.39 - Rockabilly & Rock 'n' Roll From The Vaults Of United Artists Records (CD)
- In the 1950s, the major Hollywood film studios established their own record companies, primarily to market the soundtracks from their films on record.
- Bear Family Records® dedicates the now already 39th edition in the 'That'll Flat Git It!' series to rockers from the United Artists Records catalog.
- Since late 1957, great recordings of rockabilly and rock and roll singers appeared there, many of whom moved on to other companies after one or two singles.
- But even later popular names like Al Casey, George Jones or Delbert McClinton with The Straitjackets recorded for United Artists.
- The liner notes in the as usual extensive and illustrated booklet are written by Bill Dahl, the recordings are from the best possible sources and have been carefully edited.
The latest entry in Bear Family Records®‘ ‘That’ll Flat Git It’ series surveys UA’s fascinating early rock and roll catalog, full of promising singers that only cut one or two splendid singles for the imprint (Chuck Wiley, Ronnie Brent, Warren Miller, Wes Bryan, Hunt Stevens, Brein Fisher, Wendell Smith, The Four J’s) before moving on, along with a handful of better-known names (Al Casey, George Jones, Delbert McClinton’s Straitjackets) on hand for good measure. Lee Hazlewood and his then-partner Lester Sill produced a handful of late ‘50s rockers for UA, and there are even tastes of belting Chicago R&B (Joyce Davis’ Superman) and atmospheric Gulf Coast swamp pop (Gene Thomas’ Sometime) aboard this essential collection.

That'll Flat Git It CD-Album-Series with Rockabilly Music
Classic Rockabilly on CD
Back in 1992, we had the idea that we should create the all-time definitive Rockabilly CD-Album-Series, That'll Flat Git It! - Above all, Rockabilly was music recorded for 45RPM singles, so we designed a CD-Album-Serie label-by-label instead of artist-by-artist. And we compiled it for listening pleasure. Just the great stuff, plus a few super rarities.
Every of these That'll Flat Git It CDs would be for the most part a 30 song jukebox of the finest Rockabilly ever recorded for all the great labels. We sourced the very best sounding tapes and took them to the best mastering engineers. On top we took the packaging to a new level.
We adopted the catchphrase of the first Rockabilly dee-jay, Dewey Phillips, 'That'll Flat Git It!', and we hired Bill Millar, who'd compiled the still-classic label-oriented LPs in the 1970s and 1980s, to write the notes. We looked for previously unpublished photos, and tried to find all the artists who'd never been found before.
The result is a truly definitive Rockabilly CD-Album-Serie
Take a bow and listen!
In the 1950s, many of the major Hollywood film companies started their own record labels, primarily to market the soundtracks of their films on disc, and this issue browses the releases of one of these labels - United Artists. From late 1957, they issued many good rock'n'roll recordings, many featuring artists who made only one or two 45s before quitting or moving on to other labels. The label initially concentrated on releasing soundtracks from its films in its early years, but also tried to find other music to release. Back then, rock'n'roll was the name of the game and it was obvious that they were trying to break into that market. This release features many talented artists, many with only one or two singles for the label. Among these are my personal favorites Chuck Wiley doing "Tear It Up" (not to be confused with Johnny Burnette's song of the same name), Sammy Gowans ("Rockin' By Myself"), Ronnie Brent ("My Sweet Verlene"), Danny Reed ("I'm Coming Home"), Wes Bryan ("Freeze"), Warren Miller ("Everybody's Got A Baby But Me"), Billy Eldrige ("Let's Go, Baby") and the more famous Al Casey ("The Stinger" and George Jones ("Root Beer"). Lee Hazlewood from Arizona teamed up with Lester Sill and produced some fine tracks for UA. The audio on the recordings is from the best sources and is carefully edited. The booklet is richly illustrated and it's just a case of thank you, take a bow and listen.
