Celebrate your birthday with this cool little collection – a batch of party-hearty numbers hand-picked by the folks at Bear Family records – a label we've come to really trust for postwar sounds in just about any style! And just about any style is the way they approach this set too – mixing early rockers with hillbilly tracks, R&B, vocal numbers, and more – all with a vibe that's every bit as playful and punchy as some of their other titles of this nature! As with those sets, the theme is taken in a nice and loose style!

Die Party kann starten!

Der Untertitel dieser neuen Kollektion von Bear Family Records lautet: "32 (Un-)Happy Tunes For Your Birthday Party". Ja, da bietet man uns zweiunddreißig Songs, die sich mit dem Geburtstag beschäftigen. Begleitet wird diese Sammlung selbstverständlich wieder durch ein Booklet, sechsunddreißig Seiten stark mit detaillierten Ausführungen zu jedem Track und Künstler von Bill Dahl.

Nicht alle Songs der CD wird man kennen, am ehesten sprang mir Lesley Gore mit "It’s My Party" ins Auge. Zeitlich bewegen sich die Songs im Rahmen von 1951 bis 1965. Neben Lesley Gore wird man allerdings weitere bekannte Künstler*innen entdecken wie den Jump Blueser/Rhythm & Blueser Louis Jordan, Neil Sedaka, The Four Seasons, Jerry Lee Lewis, Paul Anka und Wanda Jackson.

Aber auch nicht so bekannte Acts haben sich mit diesem Glückwunsch-Thema beschäftigt, und so kann man solche wie Sil Austin, The Pixies Three, Glenn Barber, The Shells, Tino oder Janie Grant kennen lernen. Sieben Songs sind es, die hier erstmalig Platz auf eine CD-Veröffentlichung fanden.

Im Einzelnen fielen mir folgende Songs aufgrund ihrer Gestaltung auf: Das herrlich swingende und treibende "Happy Birthday Boogie" von Louis Jordan mit sattem instrumentalen Bläserarrangement und dem honkenden Saxofon des Meisters selbst, das herrlich schmalzende "When’s Your Birthday, Baby" von Johnnie Ray, der seiner Angebeteten einen Mond kaufen möchte, der herrlich harmonische Pop-Sound von Neil Sedaka, Glenn Barber mit Country-Feeling, der laszive im Cha Cha Cha-Modus wiegende Song von Bob Azzam & His Orchestra, klar – und wie sollte es anders sein – Jerry Lee Lewis lässt die Geburtstagsparty rocken!

Wir erfahren im Booklet, dass sich hinter Tino der Musiker Raymond De Martino verbirgt, auch er kann mit Rock’n’Roll die Party in Schwung bringen. Lawrence Walker And His Wandering Aces feiert nun eine ganz andere Party, hier im Cajun-Stil Lousianas. Ganz dramatisch im Balladen-Stil beendet Paul Anka mit seinem schmachtenden "Did You Have A Happy Birthday?" die Kollektion, seine Geliebte schien ihren Geburtstag wohl mit einem Anderen verbracht zu haben, das merkt man Paul auch gewaltig an in seinem Vortrag….Egal – von vorn das Ganze – und die Party kann starten!
