Steppin’ Out is a companion album featuring 94 tracks and, in a sense, a prequel to “Pushin’ Too Hard American Garage Punk 1964–1967,” which was released in 2024.

Like “Pushin’ Too Hard,” this box set also contains plenty of raw, exciting music from the 1960s, which is retrospectively referred to as garage punk. “Steppin’ Out,” however, broadens the spectrum and enriches it with surf, frat rock, and folk rock elements. These American genres, combined with the influence of the British Invasion in 1965, led to a true garage rock explosion.

Highlights include the truly wild “Surfin’ Bird” by The Trashmen, the ear-splitting proto-punk of “The Witch” by The Sonics, the grandiose guitar pop of “Don’t Talk to Strangers” by The Beau Brummels, and the reverb-drenched twang of the instrumental track “Baja” by The Astronauts.

... Among the garage-punk rarities are tracks by The Chevelle V from Texas, The Primates from New York, and the Florida groups The Tropics and The Twelfth Night. Also included is a little-known folk-rock song by the future blues legend Johnny Winter.

Mastering was handled by Grammy-nominated archivist and producer Alec Palao.
