For this particular release from our successful 10” vinyl series we have dug deep into the vaults of the Colonial record label not to present the top hits or the biggest sellers but only the rockingest sides released on that label.

Colonial Records was founded in 1951 by Orville Campbell in the small college town of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. During its 14-year run as a productive record label they released records in a hodge-podge of styles including comedy, bluegrass, pop and even gospel.

Among those many releases were some real gems in the new emerging rock n roll style. These included the first and early recordings of future music stars such as George Hamilton IV, John D. Loudermilk (Johnny Dee) and Billy ‚Crash' Craddock; all young North Carolina natives who went on the forge lasting careers in the music field.

These artists are all featured here as well as other artists who recorded for Colonial such as Doug Franklin who later established an impressive behind the scenes musical career in New York City, Henry Wilson who attempted an unsuccessful move to a major record label and North Carolina favorites E.C. Beatty and the rock combo the Goldtones.

Not to be forgotten are the Bluenotes who acted as backing vocal group on many of the Colonial releases featuring the talented guitarist, songwriter and arranger Joe Tanner. The mystery men The Franklin Brothers round out this release with no less than three sides that are pure rockabilly at its finest.

Colonial records has long been neglected in the rock n roll re-issue market so now is the chance to own the best of the rock sides from this important independent record label remastered to Bear Family’s meticulous standards all in one neat little 10” vinyl package.

So Real!

Colonial Records gilt nicht gerade als klassisches oder typisches Rock´n´Roll Label der 50ér Jahre. Doch neben Pop, Comedy und Country verirrte sich auch die ein oder andere (aus Sicht eines Rock´n´Roll Begeisterten) sehr interessante Aufnahme in den Gesamtkatalog des Labels. George Hamilton IV, John D. Loudermilk alias Johnny Dee / Ebe Sneezer und Bill Craddock zählen zu den drei bekanntesten Künstlern des Labels. Zwölf der besten und rockigsten Aufnahmen des Labels hat Bear Family Records nun auf diesem 10" Album zusammengefasst.
Zwar wurden sämtliche Titel im Verlaufe der vergangenen Jahrzehnte bereits auf diversen CD´s wiederveröffentlicht, sechs von ihnen hier aber erstmalig auf Vinyl.
Henry Wilson and The Bluenotes mit „Are You Ready" eröffnen mit reichlich Schwung dieses Klasse Album. Der Titel war mir bislang lediglich von der Rebel Rock-a-Billy Rock Vol.2 LP bekannt.
Die „ominösen" Franklin Brothers, die gleich mit drei Titeln auf diesem Album vertreten sind, können mit ihren, auf Vinyl bislang nicht wiederöffentlichten Aufnahmen („Wake up - Liltle Boy Blue", dem Titeltrack „So real" und „My little Girl") vollständig überzeugen. Ihren Stil würde ich irgendwo zwischen den Everly Brothers und Joe Bennett & The Sparkletones einordnen. Informationen zu der Band sind selbst der Bärenbande nicht bekannt. Allen musikalischen Spurensuchern, die sich nunmehr auf den Weg machen, um etwas über diese Truppe herauszufinden, möchte ich folgenden Ermittlungsansatz und Tipp auf den Weg geben: Der Sitz des Colonial Labels befand sich in der „Franklin Street", so dass ich nicht ausschließen würde, dass es sich hier in Wirklichkeit nicht um eine „Brüderband", sondern vielmehr um eine Studioband handelte, die ihren Namen von der Firmenanschrift ableitete. Parallelen zu den ebenfalls für das Label agierenden Bluenotes, sind zumindest nicht vollständig von der Hand zu weisen.
John D. Loudermilk brachte seine Aufnahmen für das Colonial Label gleich unter zwei Pseudonymen heraus. Unter dem Künstlernamen Johnny Dee veröffentlichte er u.a. den selbstkomponierten Titel „Sittin´in the Balcony", der in der Eddie Cochran Version zu erheblich mehr Ruhm gelangte. Auf diesem Album ist er als Johnny Dee jedoch mit dem etwas poppigem Song „It´s gotta be you" vertreten. Stilistisch geht dieser Titel in die Richtung von „Honeycomb" Jimmie Rodgers.
Seine unter dem Pseydonym Ebe Sneezer and the Epidemics veröffentlichter Song „That´s all I got" läßt dann auch wieder die Herzen der Rockabilly Freunde höher schlagen. Leider fand sein ebenso witziges wie großartige, auf Colonial veröffentlichte „Asiatic Flu" keine Verwendung auf diesem Album (sollte dies ein Indiz für ein möglicherweise geplantes zweites Colonial Album auf Bear Family sein???).
George Hamilton IV mit „If you don´t know" bildet dann mein persönliches Highlight auf diesem Album. Die hier vorliegende Version wurde sowohl auf Colonial, als auch kurze Zeit später auf ABC Paramount veröffentlicht. Ein rockiger Hillbilly Bopper der absoluten Extraklasse und seit Jahrzehnten auf meiner persönlichen Top 100 Liste. Hamilton´s 1962 neu eingespielte und auf RCA veröffentlichte zweite Version des gleichen Titels, ist mit der Originalversion nicht im Ansatz zu vergleichen.Sollte es Menschen geben, denen ausschließlich die RCA Version des Songs bekannt ist, denen empfehle ich vor dem Abspielen der „richtigen Version" sich einen Helm aufzusetzen, sich anzuschnallen und fest zu halten.
E.C.Beatty ist hier mit den Songs „Tarzan" und „Ugh! Ugh! Ugh!" vertreten. Die Tatsache, dass auch von diesem Künstler weitere, sehr hörenswerte Titel auf dem Label veröffentlicht wurden, nährt die Hoffnung auf ein thematisches Folgealbum. Aber bevor wir hier über ungelegte Eier spekulieren, empfehle ich erst einmal dieses tatsächlich existierende Album auf Bear Family BAF 14037. Das Album ist auf 500 Exemplare limitiert und solch eine kleine Auflage bei der dargebotenen Qualität ist schneller weg als ihr Ugh! Ugh! Ugh! sagen könnt.
Es nicht zu besitzen wäre Wahnsinn!

Fantastic!

I have the Colonial That'll Flat but the 10inch is ass-kicking too and a real joy to listen to! Fantastic mastering, dynamic sound and a nice booklet with top information from one of my favorite musicians in our are - the great Lightnin' Wells!
