Various Rock & Roll Girls (LP)

After the many requests for an LP with rare singing and playing Rock and Roll girls, it finally came that far. Besides artists like Wanda Jackson, LaVern Baker, Janis Martin etc., there are very few interesting tracks done by female singers. The reason might be that they were not given the same opportunity as men or they had less ideas for rocking recordings. Another real problem about the material of small labels is information. That's even more difficult with recordings made by Rock and Roll girls.

Betty Nickel is one of our favorites which is the reason that you can find her on number one side one. Her recording was originally done for the Californian Abbey label. Also Colleen Carson's "Going Going Gone" comes from this label. Linda & The Epics also come from California. They were on the Blue Moon label. This label has nothing to do with the other Blue Moon label from the South as records collectors (may) know. Claire Cook comes from Texas and she really knows how to boogie the piano as you can hear. "Claire's Boogie" is something that many 50's rock lovers will enjoy. Marguerite Trina is also from California. Looks like nearly every female rocker comes from the West Coast of the USA.

However, West Virginia came up with several attractive releases of which we included Boots Collins from Bluefield. Margie Morgan is presented here with 2 recordings ( yes... California ) which were made originally for Fable Records. Loretta Thompson recorded a tribute song ( Buddy-Big Bopper-Ritchie ) for Skoop records from Nashville. The other side of this release carries a nice rocker called "Square from Nowhere" which is included here. Flippin' Records produced "The Rockin' Lady" by Penny Candy. Another recording of this song is included too by Brenda Darlin'. Abbie Neal with Betty Brent and The Ranch Girls recorded "I'll Take Back That Heartache" with the help of Hardrock Gunter who also wrote the song. Judy Capps with Pat Kingary & The Kentukyans recorded "You Can Have My Love" probably in Nashville. The Genia Merrill track was an early 1960's RCA custom pressing for the Bur-K label. "Real Gone Okie'' by Renie Hicks is from California again and so is Lorelei Lynn from Oakland. Betty Jo comes from a state that didn't produce many recordings but she's on the Alaska label from Montana.
