On the occasion of her 85th birthday on October 20, 2022, Bear Family Records® congratulates her with this unique compilation of originals and rare cover versions of classic Wanda Jackson hits!
This edition from our 'Connections' series brings the songs in chronological order as Wanda Jackson recorded them at the time, plus additional versions at the end of the CD.
On 31 tracks from 1953-2007 we show the influences of the Queen of Rockabilly on the international music scene.
In addition to cover versions of Wanda Jackson titles, you can also listen to originals that Wanda Jackson covered in the 1950s.
Among them we hear a whole series of famous singers, such as Brenda Lee, Chuck Berry, The Collins Kids, Roy Orbison and Bobby Bare.
Wanda Jackson is also celebrated beyond the U.S., with performers from Australia, Great Britain, Italy, and the Netherlands.
Many rarities are included, including some recordings for the first time on CD, such as those by Bix Bryant, Betty McQuade, and Shirley Jean Wiley.
With Ray Campi, Rosie Flores, Lou Ann Barton and The Ladybirds, musicians of the recent past also pay tribute to Wanda Jackson.
The 36-page color booklet includes a foreword by Rosie Flores, the story on the subject written by noted music journalist Bill Dahl, and of course many photos and memorabilia, some rare!

Queen of Rockabilly

Although Wanda Jackson is also a gifted country singer, she made a lot of rock 'n' roll noise in the mid-1950s, which not only put her in the headlines as the first woman of the genre, but also catapulted her into the charts. She had a mega-hit with Let's Have A Party that became a classic, as did Mean Mean Man, Fujiyama Mama and quite a few others. All her classics and more can be heard on this compilation in versions by other artists, with some real rarities.

Party

Let's Have A Party is Wanda Jackson's biggest success, a true Rock 'n' Roll classic and can even be heard here in three different versions. Moreover, Wanda recorded this song several times during her entire career. Original versions of songs Wanda Jackson recorded later, such as Hot Dog! That Made Him Mad by Betty Hutton, The Collins Kids' Party, or Annisteen Allen's Fujiyama Mama, are also included.

We've also included interesting cover versions from the 1950s and 1960s on this CD, plus, for the first time, recordings from the more recent past by Ray Campi, Rosie Flores, Terry White, Lou Ann Barton, and others. Wanda's career is highlighted from early 1956 (Joyce Hahn I Gotta Know) to 1965 (Ria Valk Santo Domingo).

Incidentally, Ria Valk sings Santo Domingo in Dutch, while Wanda Jackson's original is sung in German, with which she had a huge hit in Germany. An additional and especially historic highlight is a Wanda Jackson cover by Rosie Flores with a previously unreleased live recording of the title I Gotta Know together with the German band Rumble On The Beach!

The CD is accompanied by a 36-page color booklet containing the background story written by Chicago music journalist Bill Dahl, as well as a wealth of illustrations!

Tolle Würdigung einer großartigen Künstlerin!

Die 1937 in Oklahoma geborene Wanda Jackson war bereits als Kind musikalisch unterwegs und lernte früh Gitarre und Piano. In den Fünfzigern widmete sie sich sowohl der Country-Musik, ermutigt durch den Country-Sänger Hank Thompson, als auch dem Rockabilly, seinerzeit auf Zuraten von Elvis Presley, aber auch im Rock’n’Roll war sie zu Hause. Inmitten der männlichen Domäne der drei Genres war sie eine starke Frau, die sich mit ihrem rauen Stil, inklusive ihrer Stimme, gut behaupten konnte. Wahrscheinlich wird die Protagonistin auch spontan mit ihrem Hit "Let’s Have A Party" in Verbindung gebracht werden.

Als wohl letzte bekannte noch lebende Vertreterin des wilden Sounds der Fünfziger/Anfang Sechziger hat Bear Family Records ihr nun diese prächtige Kollektion gewidmet, in ihrer Reihe "Connections". Hier gibt es Coversongs von Wandas Hits, aber ebenso Songs, die die Rockpionierin ihrerseits nachspielte oder die sie beeinflusst haben. Die Interpreten stammen vornehmlich aus den USA, aber auch aus Australien, den Niederlanden, Italien, Deutschland und Großbritannien.

Die Auswahl der Songs beschränkt sich dabei nicht auf die Fünfziger und Sechziger, sondern umfasst letztlich die Jahre 1953 bis 2007, das erste Jahr vertreten durch Betty Hutton und das letzte durch The Ladybirds. Durch die Vielzahl der verschiedenen Interpreten*innen ergibt sich auch eine ausgeprägte stilistische Vielfalt. Einige Titel sind mehrfach vertreten, nimmt man zum Beispiel "Let’s Have A Party", so finden wir den Song mit folgenden Tracks: #9 von The Collins Kids, hier genannt "Party", mit einem vergleichsweise weniger feurigen Ausdruck als die Version von Wanda. Track #10 von Rikki Henderson, der recht geglättet wirkt im Vergleich, #27 von Bix Bryant & The Raiders – eine Version, die es mit Wandas durchaus aufnehmen kann und echt gut abgeht. Schließlich versuchten sich The Ladybirds (#30) unter dem Songtitel "Man, We Had A Party" noch einmal 2007 an dem Song, doch der Swing der frühen Jahre wird hier mehr durch den rockenden Rhythmus bestimmt. Die erste Aufnahme des Liedes von Jessie Mae Robinson hat Elvis Presley 1957 eingesungen, doch letztlich bleibt für mich die Interpretation von Wanda Jackson die prickelnste und packendste!

Ansonsten finden wir neben Cover-Versionen von Wanda-Jackson-Titeln auch Originalversionen von Songs berühmter Sängerinnen und Sänger wie etwa Brenda Lee, Chuck Berry, Roy Orbison und Bobby Bare, die die Protagonistin in den 1950er Jahren gecovert hatte. Zu Raritäten, darunter einige erstmals auf CD, zählen Aufnahmen von Bix Bryant, Betty McQuade oder Shirley Jean Wiley.

Und wer kennt Shane Fenton? Wahrscheinlich wird er eher als Alvin Stardust in Erinnerung geblieben sein. Doch hier bringt er mit The Fentones eine starke Version von "Sparkling Brown Eyes", aus 1961. Unter den neueren Songs finden wir, damals anlässlich des Rockabilly-Revivals in Großbritannien entstanden, "Honey Bop" von Ray Campi And His Rockabilly Rebels, Terry White mit "Cool Love" aus 1996 – Terry White aus den Niederlanden, auch vertreten mit "Mean Mean Man", versteht es, den alten rauen Sound der Stimme von Wanda perfekt zu imitieren – die Bremer Band Velvetone mit "Funnel Of Love" aus 2001 (und das ist die Überraschung – als Gast haben sie leibhaftig Wanda Jackson dabei), Lou Ann Barton mit dem gleichen Song, hier aus 1989. Außerdem noch die oben erwähnte Rosie Flores mit einer bisher unveröffentlichten Live-Aufnahme aus dem Schlachthof Bremen vom 12. Mai 1990, hier im Übrigen hören wir am Schlagzeug jenen Mann, der für dieses Album u.a. als Re-issue Producer tätig wurde, Marc Mittelacher, und zum Schluss dann die bereits erwähnte Band The Ladybirds.

Alle diese neueren Einspielungen klingen zwar grundsätzlich ihrer Zeit verhaftet, stehen letztlich den alten Songs aus den Fünfzigern und Sechzigern in nichts nach. Von jenen älteren Einspielungen sind Einige etwas anders arrangiert, wie zum Beispiel jene von Betty Hutton (#3) und Sunny Gale (#5), sind diese doch mit einem swingenden Jazz-Feeling ausgestattet, durch die Beteiligung der Orchester von Nelson Riddle und Ralph Burns. Shirley Jean Wiley (#12) fällt auf durch ihre leicht quäkende und kindlich wirkende Stimme. Brenda Lee, selbst für ihre raue Stimme bekannt, legt eine gute Bearbeitung von "Kansas City" vor. Country-Lady Skeeter Davis stellt die Country-Seite Wandas vor mit "Right Or Wrong (I’ll Be With You") und auch Connie Francis und Roy Orbison erleben wir (#21, 25). Die Rock’n’Roll-Abteilung wird mit Chuck Berry vertreten und Bobby Bare bringt noch einen weiteren Country-Song.

Ergänzend, wie man es gewohnt ist, gibt es ein sechsunddreißig Seiten starkes Booklet, mit Hintergrundinformationen zu jedem einzelnen Track, wiederum vorbildlich zusammengestellt von Bill Dahl.

fun to hear other voices

It is fun to hear songs Wanda would later cover and songs Wanda sang first that others would cover. It's a two-way street on this series of CDs. A great concept that also works on "The Wanda Jackson Connection".
