‘Great Guitars at Sun’ includes some breath-taking playing: from legends like Scotty Moore to stylists like Luther Perkins. Some, like Carl Perkins, Little Milton and Roy Orbison, were far better known as singers. Other guitarists we selected - men like Eddie Bush and Pat Hare and Roland Janes - worked in near obscurity, but their brilliant playing illuminated recordings by better known vocalists. Sam Phillips, the founder and guiding hand of Sun Records, knew how to listen and he knew how important the musicians were. He went so far as to create a “house band” during Sun’s Golden Era -  a group of wonderful instrumentalists he would routinely call upon to play at vocalists’ recording sessions. We’ll listen to these records like Sam Phillips did, to get a deeper appreciation of the music that came out of the Sun studio. The CD also contains track-by-track listening notes by musicians and Sun historians, Hank Davis and Scott Parker.

In two collections of recordings from the legendary Sun label in Memphis ('Great Guitars at Sun' and 'Great Drums at Sun') we change the usual focus. Now the spotlight is off the singers and firmly on the guitarists and drummers who provided so much of what was great about our favorite Sun Records. There are thousands of Sun reissue albums out there but none before has put the musicians at the center of attention. That change is long overdue.

Sun Records - In the spring of 1952, Sam Phillips risked founding his own record label - Sun Records. He had been an independent producer for several years and recorded the greatest R&B hit of 1951, Jackie Brenston's Rocket 88.

So Sam Phillips knew he had chosen the right job. But would it work with Sun Records, when many independent labels had to close down quickly? It didn't look good at first either. After only two releases on Sun Records there was already a one year break.

But gradually the hits set in: With recordings by Rufus Thomas, the Prisonaires, Junior Parker and of course Elvis Presley. Then there was no stopping. Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Charlie Rich, Roy Orbison, Conway Twitty, Carl Mann, Billy Riley, Warren Smith and many others joined. They have permanently changed the world of pop music.

After the sale of the label Sun Records in 1969 there were countless re-releases of the material. But only Bear Family has always moved at a high quality level. Great music!

A fantastic compilation of great SUN music. I guess many of us who purchase this CD have these recordings already in some form,my primary aim was to get ‘ Trouble Bound’ which I believe was recorded in a garage.Great stuff with usual ‘Bear Records’ sound quality

Sehr interessant

Die CD ist gut aufgebaut und sehr abwechslungsreich. Hier bekommen auch Gitarristen, die mehr im Hintergrund gewirkt haben, die Aufmerksamkeit, die ihnen gebührt. Das Booklet ist interessant und informativ. Wieder mal alle Daumen hoch!

Great Guitars at Sun features tracks by such luminaries as Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley, Howlin' Wolf, Dick Penner and many others. As you may have surmised the guitar is the focus this time and as such this is quite the rocking album.
