A compendium of hit singles, interesting misses, cult classics and important album tracks from 1975.
While the prevailing view among pop experts is that 1975 was merely the calm before the punk-induced storm of the following year, there was a lot of vibrant, vital music being made in the UK and Ireland during this largely overlooked 12-month period.
Roxy Music, 10cc and ELO were still going strong, Thin Lizzy and post-free band Bad Company were well on their way to stardom, Hawkwind remained the lynchpins of the still thriving free festival scene and cult live performers The Sensational Alex Harvey Band unexpectedly reached the top ten in the singles charts after covering a melodramatic Tom Jones ballad.
The London-based pub rock scene hosted bands such as Ace, Brinsley Schwartz, The Kursaal Flyers and the seminal band Dr. Feelgood. Successful glam bands like Slade and Sweet were still producing good stuff, while a handful of 60s veterans - Manfred Mann, The Pretty Things, The Kinks - were updating their sound to appeal to a new generation of record buyers.
