After writing Tell It All Brother and co-writing Rueben James for Kenny Rogers, Alex Harvey let Rogers persuade him to move to Los Angeles. Signed to Metric Music, Harvey met another Metric writer, Larry Collins. For those unversed in kiddie bop, Larry was one half of the Collins Kids, a teen/pre-teen act that appeared on a TV hillbilly jamboree, 'Town Hall Party,' back in the Fifties. Even with a Columbia contract, they failed to dent the charts, but Larry was a by-god guitar prodigy. His sister, Lorrie, dated Dick Dale before she became Ricky Nelson's girlfriend, and that was before she ran away with Johnny Cash's manager. Tulsa Turnaround was the first song that Collins and Harvey wrote together. In 1971, Rogers slotted it onto his 'Transition' album with the First Edition. Three Dog Night recorded it the following year. Rogers later did Harvey and Collins a mighty favor by re-recording it during his golden era. As far as we can tell, this was the first recorded version, although Kenny's was the first released. Capitol bought Harvey's masters, some of them produced by Rogers and some produced in Tennessee by Michael Sunday. The core of the backing group heard here is Barefoot Jerry.

Harvey went on to write David Houston's #1 country hit, Baby, Baby I Know You're A Lady as well as T. Graham Brown's #1 country hit, Hell And High Water. Add to that, the Glaser Brothers' hit Rings, covered for the pop charts by Cymarron. In 1981, Larry Collins scored a #1 country hit when David Frizzell and Shelly West recorded his song, You're The Reason God Made Oklahoma. Using it as a springboard back into performing, he cut an album in Muscle Shoals and performed in Vegas, before opting for the comparative security of life as a golf pro.
