The 60s Anthology

There were no record stores in Duisburg where you could buy Muddy Waters and Sonny Boy Williamson, but instead the bands occasionally roamed the city by handcart (like The Rolling Beats from that city) or by tram (like The Mods from Gelsenkirchen). The girls were good, and the boys didn't have to "get the new music in" - either it ignited right away or not at all, then they were lost. Most of them were lit, and so the halls in the pot were full of dancing girls and heated boys. As in the other densely populated regions in Germany, there were pubs of every colour in the Ruhr area where the bands cavorted. The conservative Grenzeck pub in Gelsenkirchen, for example, whose innkeeper was suddenly on the funnel that money could be printed by paying in kind.

Werner Wulfert, The Servants, Gelsenkirchen: "In the Grenzeck-Kneipe at the landlord Egon we got a piece of warm meat sausage with potato salad as payment at the beginning. And played him the store full. Because we were young, the girls came, and they attracted the suitors. Egon rubbed his hands. Later we got 15 marks each. For four hours." The better known bands, professional bands, travelling through as a rule, deserved well. 

There were eight or ten thousand marks due per month, as was usual. But they played in the Star-Club Bochum, in the Royal Tanz Casino Gelsenkirchen, in the Barbina Starpalast Dortmund or in the Sputnik in Essen-Kettwig. But these establishments were not always solidly managed. Also in the Ruhrpott bands were occasionally fair game for the landlords, were cheated of the fee or the income of the drink lid was severely cut over the whole month.

The 60s Anthology

Diese CDs sind Teil der umfassenden Bear-Family-Reihe 'Smash...! Boom...! Bang...!', die sich thematisch mit dem Beat-Boom der mittsechziger Jahre in Deutschland befasst und auf zunächst 30 Teile ausgelegt ist. Jede CD enthält zwischen 20 und 30 Titel in restaurierter, bestmöglicher Klangqualität.

Präsentiert werden populäre Bands wie die Rattles oder Lords, aber auch weniger bekannte Gruppen wie etwa die Pages, Poor Things, Pete Lancaster And The Upsetters, Blizzards, Sound Riders und viele andere. Eine Vielzahl von Songs erlebt rund 35 Jahre nach der Erstveröffentlichung ihre Premiere auf CD, diverse Titel sind bislang noch nie auf Tonträgern erhältlich gewesen.

Parallel zum CD-Projekt erscheint das Buch 'Shakin' All Over' (Verlag: High Castle), das über den Buchhandel oder über Bear Family bezogen werden kann. Autor Hans-Jürgen Klitsch, der auch die informativen Booklets für 'Smash...! Boom...! Bang...!' besorgte, zeichnet darin das bisher detaillierteste Bild der Beat-Jahre in Deutschland.

Tolle Zusammenstellung, tolle 60er Gruppen aus dem Ruhrgebiet. Das hätte ich nicht gedacht, dass es außer German Blue Flames noch mehr gute Gruppen, z. B. The Jailbirds, gibt. Ein Hinweis: Die Gruppe Gerry and his Comets scheint aus Holland zu kommen. Im Vorwort ist ein Fehler bei Aufzählung der Gruppen: die aufgeführten Borkener Gruppen kenne ich nicht. Ich kenne wohl Les Chlochards und die Lokalmatadoren The Jail-Birds (diese Gruppe hat 2 Singles veröffentlicht)
