Smash! Boom! Bang!
The 60s Anthology

These CDs are part of an extensive bear family, Smash! Boom. Boom!, dedicated to the German beat in the mid-sixties boom. At least 30 installments are planned, and each CD will contain between 20 and 30 tracks, all remastered for the best possible sound quality.

The fifties in the Federal Republic of Germany were not so much the Rockin' 50s, but rather a time in which German songs and pop songs were cultivated and the educated citizen booted into operetta. However, there were nests in which juvenile brood rehearsed the rebellion. In Rastatt in Baden, for example, there were four students who wanted to blow their ancestors' marches and show them the way. Dieter Kersten had a good voice, so he became a singer, and together with Jürgen 'Jox' Lammer he scrubbed the guitar.

The Jox turned out to be the better one on the six strings, and so he became a melodic guitarist. Heinz Brunner wanted to drum, Curt Schwab had had piano lessons, so it was predetermined where he would be used. Together the quartet had a penchant for rock 'n' roll - Elvis, Little Richard, Fats Domino - but also less known things. The proximity to the American occupying forces made it possible. Busy rehearsals were the order of the day, mostly in Brunner sr.'s restaurant. (which - see above - was suitably called 'To the stork's nest'). One must not hide the fact that occasionally a clarinet could be heard, but soon one became aware of the stylistic confusion, and the part was first banished into his suitcase. In June 1959, the four boys unanimously chose the name The Rocking Stars at the local bathing establishment.

At parties and class afternoons they practiced their artistic performance, and then came the day when the first real performance took place: on November 11, 1959. Adelheid Schempf had been there since July and wanted to share the use of the only band microphone with Dieter (plugged into a radio with a repiled tape). Adelheid stayed with us for about another quarter of a year and still brought a lot of momentum into the shop - she got the first performances. Then she moved to the Karlsruhe Chapel of the Peter Kollenbach Combo. In September 1959 Bodo Przyborowsky had come to the great Schlagbaß. Now the band was almost complete.

The first big performance took place at the 'Golden Lion' in Rastatt-Lichtental. Adelheid had arranged the appointment with her father's support. She remembers, "I really had to kick the boys over there..."  This time Adelheid's younger sister Gisela was also involved. In the 'Golden Lion' the Rocking Stars had the big amplification system of the organizer at their disposal - an uplifting feeling for the school band. On 13 November 1959 the 'Badische Tageblatt' brought a large report about the carnival celebration, in which the group was mentioned only in one sentence.

THE ROCKING STARS

One great track worth buying this for

The usual superb Bear Family mastering and research by Hans-Jurgen. To be honest I bought this CD for only one track: Flames Of Love. A superb 'call and response' beat rocker which German bands seemed to better than anyone else. Reminds me of the German Bonds awesome 'We're Out Of Sight'. The rest of the CD is decent beat and R&B but kind of forgettable although the cover of Monday Monday was surprisingly good.
