Tommy Steele was Britain’s first pop star. The story of how Tommy fused the new energy of American rock ’n’ roll with his own passion for music styles from all over the world is told in the first of a series from Bear Family Productions: 'Doomsday Rock - The Brits Are Rocking’.

In the summer of 1956, London was throwing off the grey blanket of post war austerity. New coffee bars and clubs were thronged with young people looking for new fun and entertainment.

That summer Tommy Hicks (Steele), Lionel Bart and Mike Pratt [Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased)] met at a party in a beatnik commune called the ’Yellow Door.’ Just down the road, under the railway arches, was a café called ’The Cave.’ They decided to form a group, and call themselves The Cavemen – and the rest is Pop History.

On the CD, Tommy’s first chaotic recording session, the surreal Rock With The Cavemen keeps up the pace with his covers of Ritchie Valens’ Come On Let’s Go and Freddie Cannon’s Tallahassie Lassie. More of Tommy’s own songs are included – Teenage Party, The Trial, Hey You!, and an instrumental in which Tommy does a fair impression of a drunk, Drunken Guitar, plus many more!

"Tommy Steele"

Tommy Steele, born Thomas Hicks in Bermondsey, London, on Dec. 17, 1936, was Britain's first rock'n'roll star. Discovered singing Hank Williams material and calypsos — learnt while working on a cruiser based in New York — he became a teenage idol almost literally overnight. His first record, 'Rock With The Caveman', was made just two days after his recording test in September, 1956. Within a month it was a British Top Ten hit. Steele's first tour began in November, 1956, and introduced the amplifier to the British stage.

With Lionel Bart and Mike Pratt, Steele wrote some of his British hits of the Fifties, including 'Rock With The Caveman' and 'A Handful Of Songs' and he had further hits with cover versions of American records, 'Singing The Blues' (Guy Mitchell), 1957, and 'Tallahassee Lassie' (Freddie Can-non), 1959. The latter showed Steele in unfamiliar guise as a tough, heavy rocker. Heavy rocker he was not, however, and it was inevitable that Steele would leave rock'n'roll.

His personality was that of the archetypal cheery Cockney, and clearly stemmed more from the vaudeville tradition than from an imported rock'n'roll milieu. By the beginning of the Sixties, Steele had begun to suc-ceed in All-Round Entertainment, at which he has since triumphed. Steele's importance to British rock'n'roll simply derives from his having been there first, rather than from any subsequent creative contribution.

Ein toller Einblick in das Werk eines Wegbereiters des Britrock

Larry Parnes nahm ihn unter sein, Fittiche als Manager, e folgten erste Plattenau f-nahmen und Chartsno-tierungen (etwa für das surreale „Rock with the Cavernen" und „Singing the blues". Zudem kam es gleich zu zwei Spiel-filmen in nur einem Jahr. Die Bear Family-Compilation fasst die interessantesten Aufnah-men der Jahre 1956 bis 58 zusammen, darun-ter das düstere dröhnende „Doomsday rock", das swingende Hank Williams Cover „Kaw-liga" und Ritchie Valens' „Come on let's go".

Zudem sind da noch eine Reihe von spannenden Eigenkomposi-tionen aus dem Hause Steele wie „Hey you!", „The trial" und nicht zuletzt „Drunken guitar". Presse - Tommy Steele Doomsday Rock - The Brits Are Rocking, Vol.1 - Vive Le Rock issue #65 TOMMY STEELE DOOMSDAY ROCK (Bear Family) Early rockin' tracks. 7/10 This looks to be the first in a series subtitled 'The Brits Are Rockin' Vol I'. Tommy Steele is a fitting artist to kick off the series, he was a true UK original with the first track here 'Rock Around The Town' dating from 1956 from which the title track also dates. Steele's style was a mixture of Elvis Presley but musically more akin to Bill Haley's Comets still hugely popular at the time. His early recording backing band were seasoned jazz musicians which also lent to the latter. Prolific doesn't doesn't cut it when it comes to describing the speed at which Decca recorded and churned out his records. Quite telling that the first 'Tommy Steele Story' EP was out in 1957. Of the 34 tracks included most were recorded in that rockin' 56/57 period, when Tommy Steele was the top of the pile of UK rock 'n' roll, here's why. Simon Nott

Här i Sverige började intresset för Tommy året efter och det växte sig snabbt. Han gjorde han sin första turné i Sverige i september år 1957 och redan i april var han tillbaks, denna gång med John Barry Seven i kompet. Så var det kampen mellan Tommy och Elvis i Bild Journalen 1958 och i en om-röstning som tidningen arrangerade blev han vald till rock-kung. Ar 1956 fick han sin enda listetta i England med en cover på Marty Robbins «Singing The Blues» och bland hans övriga topplåtar därstädes kan nämnas «Shirley Lee» (9:a 1957), «Water, Water» (5:a 1957), «Nairobi (3:a 1958), «Come On, Let's Go» (9:a 1958), «Little White Bull» (6:a 1959) och «What A Mouth• (5:a 1959). Han gav ut tre album på 1950-talet «The Steele Show» (5:a 1957), «The Tommy Steele Story» (1:a 1957) och «The Duke Wore Jeans» (1:a 1958). Här i Sverige kom ett antal singel- och Ep-skivor och jag vill minnas art «Nairobi», «Build Up», «Elevator Rock» och «The Only Man On The Island» spelades på ung-domsdanserna. I början av 1960-talet lade han rockgitarren på hyllan och ägnade resten av karriären på musikalscenen. Han gjorde liksom Elvis ett antal filmer och hans första kom redan 1955 med «Kill Me Tomorrow», därefter följde bland annat «The Tommy Steele Story» (1957), «The Duke Wore Jeans» (1957) och «Tommy The Toreador» (1959). Steele's style was initially vocally Elvis Presley but musically more Bill Haley's Comets which made for a great mash-up. Of the 34 tracks included most were recorded in that rockin' 56/57 period, when Tommy Steele was the top of the pile of UK rock n roll before he became a music hall cheeky cockney. Simon Nott
