Especially here in Germany, King Size Taylor was known in the early sixties as a regular guest in Hamburg's Star-Club. In the Hanseatic city he had more than 250 performances between 1962 and 1964 and recorded exclusively in Germany during this time. Due to the creation of legends around the young Beatles, King Size Taylor also ran under the popular label 'Beat'. But on closer inspection Taylor was and always remained the real rocker from the British Isles.
After his first musical attempts in a skiffle band (1957), the guitarist and singer, who was born in Liverpool on November 12, 1939, soon after founded a rock 'n' roll formation, which performed under King Size Taylor And The Dominos from 1960 onwards and moved to Hamburg in 1962. Ariola released live recordings from the Star-Club. A somewhat later album, 'Let's Do The Slop, Twist, Madison, Hully Gully ...' was released by the German Polydor company - under the pseudonym The Shakers. Single releases were issued in Great Britain as well, including Money, Whole Lotta Lovin' and Hippy Hippy Shake. Like the other numbers on the LPs, these songs were cover versions of the hottest rock and R&B originals of the time.
After the band broke up, Taylor went back to England, where he was unable to continue the great success of his days in Hamburg.
In addition to the recordings for Ariola and Polydor, the CD on Bear Family contains four rare, previously little known recordings from 1958, which were recorded in the living room of a band member in Liverpool at the time and are of astonishingly good quality. The liner notes in the thick 36-page booklet were written by Ashley Wood, an acknowledged expert on the British rock 'n' roll scene. Edward 'Ted' Taylor was recently interviewed by him.
We hope you enjoy these top-class recordings and great British rock of the early sixties.

King Size Taylor
November 12, 1939 - December 23, 2022
Ted Taylor aka King Size Taylor left this earth on 12/23/22 at the age of 83! According to his sons, he fell asleep peacefully.
Born on the twelfth of November 1939 in Liverpool, England, King Size Taylor started his musical career in the second half of the 1950s in the skiffle group 'The James Boys', but soon turned to the more popular rock & roll music and formed the band 'King Size Taylor & The Dominoes'. The band had their first guest appearance at the Hamburg 'Star-Club' in 1962 and many more were to follow. In a conversation Ted told me that he had played exactly 542 gigs in the Star-Club and thus had the most gigs altogether in Germany's most popular music club! Record contracts with the companies Polydor, Philips and Ariola followed quickly and the band often went after the live performances, which often ended at 01:00 o'clock at night, into the studio to make recordings! King Size Taylor accompanied with the Dominoes also Chuck Berry and Carl Perkins on their England tours in 1964!
King Size Taylor & The Dominoes eventually broke up in 1964 and Ted went back to England! Even if the band was called a so-called 'Beat Group', it was always more a Rock & Roll band and had nothing to do with the sounds of the 'Beatles', 'Swinging Blue Jeans', 'Searchers' and 'Hollies', among others, and the great commercial success thus unfortunately failed to appear. This fate Taylor shared not least with the companions Tony Sheridan and Lee Curtis, but Ted never struggled with it and dedicated himself again to his profession as a butcher, but played live gigs again and again and never completely said goodbye to music!
Now we say goodbye to him .... We were lucky and honored to work with him on his 'The Brits Are Rocking' CD (BCD17603) and the 10inch LP 'Taylor Made' (BAF14011) and he supported us with many anecdotes, information and photo material and, according to our impression, really enjoyed the projects!
Ted was a great man with a full life and always cheerful and helpful - we will remember you very well,

Heartily recommended!
Coming hot on the heels of the Tommy Steele and Billy Fury releases in this series, Bear Family Records have put out a CD release of Kingsize Taylor and the Dominoes 1960's rockers. Unlike most of the Liverpool groups of the early '60s, Kingsize and the boys could rock authentically American-style and they never became one of the top 'beat' groups. Commercially, this probably worked against them, but listening to these recordings today the songs have an 'edge' that acts like the Searchers never had.
So, what treats lie in wait for the listeners? Well, it's got all the hot tracks they recorded for Decca, Phillips and Polydor — including the magnificent 'Stupidity and 'Bad Boy'- which have graced the
38
stages of IFTW on many an occasion. Their take on The Dovells"You Can't Sit Down' makes the original sound pedestrian by comparison. I've always loved their version of the early Billy Joe Royal's 'Never In A Hundred Years' which shows what an amazingly tight band they had in '62. Kingsize's exquisite falsetto really pushes this to a higher level and why it wasn't released in the UK could be considered as an unsolved crime of the last century.
Along with the 27 original 60's tracks are four songs recorded in Dominoes' piano player Sam Hardie's house in 1958. With a driving piano from Sam and bass from Bobby Thompson, Kingsize powers through 'Good Golly Miss Molly' and 'Matchbox'. How these stayed only as a 78 Acetate and not released through a major company seems unbelievable 60 years later. Only Cliff and Terry Dene were rockin' so authentically at this time, with the latter smothered by Decca's session men. The last two songs are penned by Sam and Kingsize and are brilliant. Homegrown (and home recorded) RnR from '58 which is better than 99% of the British major releases of the time. All recorded with one microphone (like Baker Knight's 'Bring My Cadillac Back'), they sound raw and, boy! Do they rock? Betcha they do. As always with Bear Family releases, the presentation is first class. A 36-page booklet, full of photos from Kingsize's own archives, well written liner notes and, finally, accurate session details make this an important release. I heartily recommend.
long overdue release
