In American television, pharmaceutical advertising is ubiquitous—drugs for depression, skin conditions, digestive problems, or memory loss are promoted as a matter of course. What is no longer seen is a product claiming to cure everything. That exact promise, however, defined “Hadacol” from the 1940s through the 1950s. Driven by massive marketing campaigns, it became a nationwide phenomenon with deep pop-cultural resonance. Promotional tours featuring stars such as Hank Williams, Carmen Miranda, and Bob Hope marked the peak of its notoriety. Numerous songs about, or directly referencing, this pseudo-medicine are documented here.
