Trucks define country music – at least to people who dislike country music! The reduction of an entire genre to the iconic power of the multi-wheelers may seem strange and superficial, but there is a core of truth in the cliché.

True, the songs lament the everyday struggles of tough blue-collar guys, delivered by tobacco-cured baritone voices. With matter-of-factness or cynical humor, the trucker’s basic needs, or cheating on them long, lonely drives on endless nowhere roads are monologued about. And another classic American motif, the epic fight between the loner and the law. Diversion and endurance are supported by popping pills, flirting with cute waitresses, or talking trash on the “Interstate Intranet” that was CB radio.

But there’s more to it than that: Trucks and truckers genuinely embody the American spirit, or at least its myth. It’s all there – the rugged individualism; the self-made man; the lonely rambler on the lookout for the last frontier - a 20th-century version of the open range and the wily cowboy. No matter how often the road beats you, you get back up, fight your fate, and haul your heavy load all over again.

Several well-known - and just as many obscure - tarmac troubadors hunt down the American dream on this here heavy-loaded anthology: You have the ubiquitous drama king Red Sovine with Ten Days Out and Two Days In, country royalty Ernest Tubb and Red Foley offering the tongue-in-cheek masterpiece It’s the Mileage That’s Slowin’ Us Down, Bakersfield stalwart Red Simpson with his rendition of A Tombstone Every Mile (that’s three mighty Reds for ya). Cult classics like Billy Strange’s Diesel Smoke and Dangerous Curves and Truck Drivin’ Man via Billy Woods’ version are found side by side with more obscure - but no less cult – tracks, Gear Jammer (Jimmy Logsdon), and cajun come western swing legend Link Davis’ homage to Elvis, Trucker from Tennessee.

Trucker country was one of the major styles of the post-war years. The streamlined age fueled it: mass production, the need for speed, change, and the promise of progress after a combined effort to change the world. Thus, the music is fast, rocking, reeling, and wheeling - it ranges from honky tonk and western swing, to rockabilly influenced blues, and the ultimate trucking twanging Telecaster and Fender Twin sound from Bakersfield. There are also two talking blues songs on this great compilation, That’s Truck Drivin’ by Slim Jacobs, and Green Truck Driver’s First Experience with Radar by Coleman Wilson – highly authentic and fascinating, as if the laconic truckers had invented the talking blues genre while jiving on the CB radio. BCD17737 ‘Diesel Smoke and Dangerous Curves, Vol. 1’ features several rare tracks from King and Starday, two labels that pushed the genre with many classic LP compilations featuring ultra-cool, colorful cover art.
