Bob Dylan’s rise to prominence in the years leading up to 1965 shook the British folk scene. His influence was immediately felt and far-reaching. Yet by 1965, British folk musicians were already developing their own style.

Some artists drew on the folk tradition, but modernised it to suit contemporary tastes. Examples of this include the Ian Campbell Folk Group, Shirley Collins, Dominic Behan, The Dubliners, Martin Carthy and The Watersons.

At this time, pop music was also influenced by folk, as evidenced by singles from artists such as Donovan, The Seekers, Chad & Jeremy, Unit Four Plus Two, Peter & Gordon and many others.

1965 was also the year in which female folk singers came to the fore in Britain, led by Julie Felix, who achieved enormous popularity. Hailed as ‘Britain’s First Lady of Folk’, Felix was the first folk artist to sell out the Royal Albert Hall, and at the same time the first pop artist to perform at Westminster Abbey. Marianne Faithfull released folk material in May 1965, and Vashti Bunyan’s debut single also came out that month.

This year also saw important releases from artists whose work would bridge the gap between folk and rock. Davy Graham was a brilliant guitarist who fused traditional folk music with a wide range of influences, creating something new and vibrant. Bert Jansch was another pioneering guitarist whose idiosyncratic style was adopted by many subsequent musicians. The work of both artists was to exert a major influence on bands such as The Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin and many others.

Although Britain went its own way, American influences continued to be felt, as evidenced by the artists recorded here, such as Paul Simon, Jackson C. Frank and Jesse Fuller. Numerous cover versions of American songs are also included here, including those by Dorris Henderson, Dave Helling, the Malcolm Price Trio, Patrick Small, Dedicated Man’s Jugband and others, all of whom drew their material from America.
