Shocking Blue was a Dutch rock band from The Hague that reached its peak in the 1960s and 1970s and enjoyed great success across the Atlantic! The band was founded in 1967 and quickly became very successful after signing singer Mariska Veres. With their single “Venus,” they were the first Dutch band ever to reach number 1 on the American Billboard Hot 100. The band had a string of other hits but decided to disband in 1975. Their influence extended far beyond their generation: even bands like Nirvana and The Prodigy sampled Shocking Blues’ “Love Buzz.” Although they were considered a one-hit wonder, they released several albums of very high quality. One of the best in many respects is “Scorpio’s Dance”: its cover was named one of the most legendary LP covers in Dutch pop history.
