Ein Lied machte sie unvergessen: „As Tears go by' war ihr Hit 1964. Mick Jagger hatte das Lied für sie komponiert. Die beiden hatten sich auf einer Party in London kennengelernt. Die Tochter einer Baroneß und ehemalige Klosterschülerin lebte gerade in Scheidung, als sie die Stones kennenlernte. Mick Jagger hatte es sofort auf sie abgesehen, konnte aber zunächst nicht bei ihr landen. Mehr Glück dagegen hatte Brian Jones - bis der Funke zwischen ihr und Mick doch noch übersprang.

Die Liebe zu Mick hatte aber auch noch andere Folgen als den Hitruhm. Marianne lernte die Drogenszene kennen, wurde süchtig und kam zur Entziehungskur nach einem Selbstmordversuch. Das war auch das Ende ihrer Schlagerkarriere, die ihr noch 3 weitere Hits, „Come and stay with me', „This little Bird' und „Summer Nights', brachte - aber insgesamt nur 1 Jahr dauerte.
