A Chapter of German Rock History

This 6-CD edition is not just a retrospective – it’s a documented counter-model to the standard narrative of German pop history. The Petards demonstrate what was possible when a band operated fully independent, controlling production, promotion, and distribution themselves.

Emerging from rural Hesse in the mid-1960s, The Petards became one of the most active and self-sufficient beat and rock bands in Germany. Over 1,100 live shows, original material, international tours, and chart success prove their impact – even if the global breakthrough never came. That’s not the point. They set the benchmark.

They were ahead of their time: self-designed stage outfits, one of the first sophisticated light shows in Germany, and a highly effective DIY marketing system built on fan clubs, stickers, and direct promotion. Nearly 400 active fan clubs created a reach that today would require major media infrastructure. The band functioned as a fully integrated unit – musicians, management, and promotion all in one.

Musically, they operated between beat, early rock, and pop. No avant-garde, no krautrock – but tight, powerful, and uncompromising live. Their strength was not complexity but energy, precision, and stage presence. That was their advantage – and later their limitation in a rapidly changing musical landscape.

This anthology presents the complete recorded output in a coherent edition. It is complemented by extensive liner notes from Werner Pieper – not academic distance, but direct insight from a fan deeply embedded in the scene, placing the band in its cultural and social context.

Super groupe des années 60/70

Un régal à écouter les titres de ce groupe ,malheureusement assez méconnu en France.. Une anthology parfaite grâce à Bear Family Records ,qui nous replonge dans une période nostalgique...

Sehr gute Musik aus Deutschland

Als alter Beat Fan habe ich die Pedards erst jetzt endeckt und Liebe diese Sammler Box.Die Musik brauch sich vor den Englischen Beat größen nicht zu verstecken..allerdings gefällt mir CD 4 nicht merh so gut mit neuem Gitaristen.Trozdem eine Tolle Box die man als Krautrock oder Beat Fan haben muss.

umfassend und liebevoll zusammengestellt

die Remakes von uralten Tonträgern find ich super !
Von meiner Jugendzeit damals
existieren die meisten LPs oder MCs nicht mehr.
Die paar Übrigen, die noch überlebt haben,
wurden ein Opfer des Zahnes der Zeit.

u. a. in der 6CD-Setlist
ist der allererste Song 'Baby run, run, run' vergessen worden
und alle anderen CD1-26 Songs gehören in ihrer Nummer plus 1

Sehr interessant sind die CCR-Covers und die Live-Aufnahmen !

Perfekt zu ihrer Zeit

Tolle Musik, die ich als Schwälmer besonders genieße. Mit den heutigen Möglichkeiten sich zu promoten wären die Petards auf Jahre vorn dabei.

ich bin Jahrgang 1963 und habe die Musik z. T. damals bereits hören können als kleiner Junge, da ich einen Bruder habe, der 10 Jahre älter ist als ich. Ich werde mir möglivherweise noch ein 2. Exemplar der Anthology zulegen, tolle Songs.
