PETARD (Mrs. pétard, péter, to make a light explosion)

The brothers Klaus and Horst Ebert already played in a Skiffle & Dixie Band, the Magic Stompers, during their schooldays (1961). At the end of 1962, in the course of the general music development, these turned into a twist and beat band, which once posed as Lemmon Drops or Blizzards. Father Ebert was a respected doctor in Schrecksbach in Upper Hesse. The two brothers, and thus the entire group, certainly benefited from this good image.

Rüdiger Waldmann, who was only called'Roger', joined the band in 1962 as bass player. Without exception, English and American hits were played, which Klaus rearranged and made playable for the group.

In 1964, Horst came across the name Petard in an encyclopaedia: Blallfrosch.

Originally in French:'Pitàrd', the word became an English term on the detour via New Orleans. The emphasis is on the 2nd syllable, but the Hessian vernacular has made it'Piitarts'. Or in Koseform whether'rhessisch Peddarts'. When the group later wanted to change their name to'Pet Arts' to reflect the spirit of the times, it was unfortunately already too late. It can be ruled out that the band knew then what Pétard means today in French: It is a contemporary description for a joint. Then they probably would have had other brilliant ideas. All four stated in an official press release that their favourite drink was milk. In fact, her stage design has always been much more psychedelic than her everyday reality.

In 1965 the boys finished high school and began to study in Gießen and Marburg. Actually this meant the early end of the band, but then Klaus got a lucrative offer for the band in the summer semester holidays: 50 DM per evening & nose (for comparison: the chronicler got 30 DM per month as an apprentice at that time). Instead of working like their fellow students during the semester break, the musicians came to 27 gigs.

In the following winter semester break the band played together again and presented their first own compositions. In March 1966 alone, 11 performances took place in Niedergrenzebach in Swabia.

The local newspaper reported that their beat music was not yet part of the general cultural heritage. The local court of Schwalmstadt (at that time still: Treysa) thundered them to a fine of 50 DM each, since one of their concerts was "loud".  "By order of the court, those affected in the medium-sized courtroom have put their abilities and also the far-reaching radius of their achievements to the test. It was an unbearable roar, so the description of a witness that you couldn't understand your own word on the street doesn't seem exaggerated....... There are ways and means to dampen this loud music....... Those affected knew what a terrible noise they were making."  The local newspaper'Der Schwalm-Bote' reported under the headline'Aus dem Gerichtssaal tönte heiße Beatmusik'. The newspaper was also to be owed the relevant reference that?with Petards meetings also violently may be danced? In addition, young people often only had to pay half of the original price.

Although all four had no musical education, the boys soon dreamed of a professional music career with their own records. Horst found an ad in the magazine'Musikparade', through which the band came into contact with Hans Werner Kuntze from Osnabrück. With his help, the single Baby Run, Run, Run, Run, Run and Pretty Miss were recorded one day during the next semester break, on August 4, 1966. Both original compositions. Kuntze took over all costs, sold 500 records for 1,500.00 DM and let the metronomes sell the remaining 1312 records. He also made sure that the record was mentioned in the music press.

From today's perspective, however, Kuntzes most important act was to give the boys with 27 "homework" a plan for "advertising on new releases".  He also gave the volume the addresses of 17 agencies, 15 major radio stations and programme designers as well as 23 magazine editors. This marked the beginning of the "systematic phase" for the band. Most of Kuntze's exercise book tasks were successfully completed:

"The Petards"

The Petards

THE PETARDS IN A FAST COURSE

They loved making music and shared a common vision and the will to realize it. They revealed surprising abilities and talents with which they almost lasted for a few years for themselves and for the entire Upper Hessian region.

She achieved many of her early goals: Well over 1000 performances, 100,000 sold copies of the 1st LP, repeated tours abroad, No 1 hits, LP release in Japan etc. Only the biggest wish: they were denied a number 1 in the USA. The story of the Petards is a very unusual success story, even if the Schrecksbacher firecrackers never became intercontinental rockets...

They not only had more ideas than most of their rock colleagues, they also implemented them permanently themselves:

They offered a sovereign stage choreography.
They designed their own stage clothes and had them sewn.
They were the first band in the country with an ingenious lightshow (incl. strobe lights). The individual parts for this were purchased from the Kassel-based electrical trade.
They were the first band to distribute stickers with their own logo (and other promotional material anyway).
They built up a network of 380, mostly really active fan clubs, which made them as popular as they are today only possible via MTV/Viva.
They repeatedly exchanged the concert stage with a theater stage
They organized the legendary Herzberg festivals, at which German pop mainstream met the underground for the first time.
To top it all off, Arno delivered his incomparable drum solo every evening at his shooting range with two bass drums (New!).

Eventually they were overtaken by the times, the spirit of the times, the growing competition (with hair, musicians & managers & connections), sometimes even overtaken: For some years they set the bar very high for other bands. They consistently fulfilled their demands, which many an alternative Krautrock/Underground band failed to meet:

They were absolutely independent.
They wrote their own plays.
They were their own road managers for a long time.
The man on the rhythm guitar was the manager.
The man on bass was the fan support.
They designed their own logo, posters and record covers themselves.
They were also as professionals their own promoters, organized many appearance from A - Z themselves.

Actually, this band shouldn't have had any success, because they were carrying around some handicaps. It speaks for them that they took them away effortlessly for years:

The Petards had no manager, no connections in the music business, no role model to copy.
They were, albeit ambitious, yet isolated boys from the deepest province.
Two band members were objectively seen very moderate musicians.
Two band members wore toupees from the beginning because of their sparse hair growth. (A phenomenon that is still rare in rock history.)

With this CD edition of their total output, 25 years after the end of the band, a late happy ending is delivered.

Let's go back to the beginning....

Customer evaluation for "Anthology (6-CD Deluxe Box Set)"
14 Jul 2018

u. a. in der 6CD-Setlist
