Billy Walker: Whirlpool - Gonna Shake This Shack Tonight - Billy Walker (CD)

1-CD Digipak (4-page) with 28-page booklet, 30 tracks. Total playing time approx. 69 minutes.

Billy Walker's career spanned a period of almost sixty years!
Already as a teenager he became a member of the legendary Big D Jamboree in Dallas.
In 1949 the Texan signed his first record deal with Capitol Records, two years later he landed a contract with Columbia.
From 1952 he belonged to the Louisiana Hayride and scored his first hit in 1954 with Thank You For Calling.
Bear Family's CD album in the popular 'Gonna Shake This Shack' series proves that Walker was much more than just the ballad singer on the Grand Ole Opry.
We present the first fourteen years of his career, from 1949 to 1962.
Stylistically, the spectrum ranges from Texas honky-tonk, fast shuffles and Tex-Mex-style songs to rockabilly and up-beat pop.
The CD is rounded off by his early Nashville recordings, including his only number one hit, Charlie's Shoes from 1962.
Liner notes by Dave Samuelson in the extensively illustrated booklet.

In a career stretching nearly sixty years, Billy Walker (1929-2006) charmed audiences with his lively stage presence and lilting Texas tenor. Often overlooked and underrated since his tragic death, this new entry in Bear Family’s ‘Gonna Shake This Shack’ series reveals that Walker was far more than a Grand Ole Opry balladeer. Spanning Walker’s first fourteen years on record, this set includes Texas honky-tonk, up-tempo shuffles, Tex-Mex novelties, rockabilly and upbeat pop. His early Nashville Sound hits are here, too, including his only country chart-topping Charlie’s Shoes.

BILLY WALKER OBITUARY

Books have been spun out of lesser fabric than Billy Walker's life. His mental log of all he saw and heard amounted to a journal of post-War country music. He was there at Hank Williams' last show and at Elvis Presley's first big public appearance in Memphis. He was hanging around waiting to cut a session while Buddy Holly recorded Words Of Love; he just narrowly missed boarding the plane on which Patsy Cline, Cowboy Copas and Hawkshaw Hawkins perished; and he was there the night that Red Foley passed away. Billy tried to draw some meaning from all this, but it was simply too numbing to contemplate. Now Billy himself has passed away. He was killed in a single-car traffic accident in the early hours of Sunday May 21, 2006 on a stretch of Interstate 65 in Alabama known as the Hank Williams Highway.

Born in Ralls, Texas, on January 14, 1929, Billy was inspired by Gene Autry to take up music. After getting out of school in 1947, he worked various day jobs before beginning his career fronting for sometime Columbia artist Jimmy Lawson in 1948. He joined the Big D Jamboree in Dallas (where he was billed as the Traveling Texan and wore a Lone Ranger-styled mask) and worked for Hank Thompson in Waco. It was Thompson who got him his first contract with Capitol in 1949. Eighteen months later, Billy switched to Columbia. His first charted hit was Thank You For Callingin 1954.

Billy joined the Louisiana Hayride in 1952, moved to the Ozark Jubilee in '54, flirted briefly with rock 'n' roll, and then returned to Texas to work the beerjoints. In 1959, he moved to Nashville to join the Grand Ole Opry, and remained a member until his death. His records began charting with more regularity. His original version of Funny How Time Slips Awaystalled at #23 on the country charts, but the follow-up, Charlie’s Shoes, hit the top spot in 1962. He continued to chart records regularly into the 1980s, and his last records were on his own Tall Texan label.

An engaging raconteur with a bottomless fund of stories, Billy was a much-loved character in Nashville. He was returning from a gig in Gulf Shores, Alabama when his van ran off the road and overturned. Those killed alongside him included his wife, Bettie, and a friend, Daniel Patton.

We at Bear Family have reissued one of Billy's rock 'n' roll recordings in our 'That'll Flat Git It' series, but we have also reissued all of his recordings complete from 1949-1965 on a 5-CD set, 'Cross The Brazos At Waco.'

Top notch comp!

I was always aware of two or three uptempos of Billy Walker but never expected that he did that much on good uptempo songs! I thought he always was too country but this CD was a true revelation to me AND I'm glad Bear Family is continuing the 'Gonna Shake This Shack' series!

Press and Reviews
Press Archive - Billy Walker Whirlpool - Gonna Shake This Shack Tonight - Keys and Chords
Press Archive - Billy Walker Whirlpool - Gonna Shake This Shack Tonight - Keys and Chords Billy Walker, born on 14 January 1929, managed to build a musical career that would span no less than 6 decades. As a teenager he already belonged to the legendary Big D. Jamboree in Dallas. He got his first record deal with Capitol Records in 1949. Two years later, however, he left the label because he was accommodated at Columbia. From 1952 he was part of the Louisiana Hayride and even later he was especially appreciated for his performances in the Grand Ole Opry. On this album, which is part of the series 'Gonna Shake This Shack Tonight', Bear Family focuses on the first years of Walker's career, from 1949 to 1962. It soon turns out that Billy was enormously versatile. The 30 songs bundled here include catchy Texas honky tonk, handsome shuffles, rockabilly, compelling country and ennobled upbeat pop. Also impressive is Walker's version of the Roy Baham composition 'Charlie's Shoes'. By the way, it was the only song with which Billy Walker took first place in the Country Charts in 1962.

Press Archive - Billy Walker Whirlpool - Gonna Shake This Shack Tonight - rocktimes
