Black Europe – The Books from the Grammy-Nominated Landmark Project

Nominated for the 2015 Grammy Award for Best Historical Album, Black Europe: The Sounds And Images Of Black People In Europe Pre-1927 is widely regarded as one of the most ambitious research projects ever undertaken on the early history of the African diaspora in Europe.

What is offered here is a remaining stock of the original books only – without the 44 CDs and without the outer slipcase.

Included are the two large-format hardcover volumes (approx. 300 pages each), an extensive scholarly work richly illustrated with over 1,000 mostly color images, biographies, discographies and archival documentation. Edited by historians and discographers Jeffrey Green, Dr. Rainer E. Lotz and Howard Rye, the project represents decades of international research into the presence of Black performers in Europe before 1927.

The books document evidence for around 2,000 early recordings, of which 1,244 titles were identified and historically reconstructed, spanning the period from the 1880s to the late 1920s and the introduction of the microphone [Green, Lotz, Rye, Black Europe, Bear Family Records].

Readers encounter the stories of musicians, dancers, entertainers and speakers: from Josephine Baker’s earliest recordings, to African American ragtime and jazz artists touring European variety stages, to rare recordings of African languages and religious traditions that today serve as important historical sources.
