If you were astride a mighty camel while fearlessly navigating the wind-swept sands of the Sahara, good old-fashioned rock and roll would be just about the last commodity you would expect to encounter.

Yet such fantastic scenarios inspired a slew of songs set to exotically rocking rhythms, their unusual narratives constructed around sheiks, harems, oases, King Tut and Ali Baba, and far-off locales like Bagdad and Istanbul. The Fendermen, The Polk Brothers, and Bobby Christian offer contrasting treatments of Duke Ellington’s immortal Caravan, while Ganimian and His Orientals extend the irresistible invitation Come With Me To The Casbah and Kent Westberry demonstrates how to do the Turkish Doghouse Rock.

This CD is even better than I imagined. So many songs of the Arabian Desert theme sound I never knew existed all on one CD.

This album is simply irresistible...

Bear Family Records remains heaven but also financial hell for lovers of all kinds of roots music. Every release from this label is a textbook example of careful archiving. You come across the most diverse and bizarre themes. This time, Bear Family takes us to the think-about land of Ali Baba, where rock heroes like Jerry Reed, Bill Haley, Johnny and The Hurricanes and other lesser-known icons performed in local clubs. Song titles like 'Pasha', 'Ahab The Arab', 'Arabian Love Call', 'Shish Ka Bob Rock' and 'In A Persian Market' clearly show the mood and content.

The enclosed booklet is full of out-there information about the bands and arties, including vintage photos and film posters with slogans like 'The Shapes That Shook A Harem Empire' and 'Open Sesame To A World Of Magical Arabian Nights Splendor!' The back cover featuresthe ultimate pin-up Betty Page in Oriental attire. Ab in die Wüste!

Alibaba, Aladin & Co. im US-Schlager der 50er und 60er

Der bunte und mit seinen Ausgrabungen immer wieder köstliche musikalische Strauß der „Destination“-Serie von Bear Family hat eine neue schillernde exotische Blüte getrieben: „Destination Desert“: Also ab in die Wüste! Stefan Kohne hat die Archive nach Pop-Juwelen durchsucht, die zwischen 1955 und 1966 den offenbar besonders für Amerikaner faszinierenden Vorderen Orient so in Pop-Songs umgesetzt haben, wie der kleine Moritz oder besser der kleine Sam sich eine Welt zwischen Wüstensand, Basaren, Harems und Tausendundeiner Nacht vorgestellt haben mag.

Da steckte viel Exotik und Erotik (in den USA seinerzeit noch ziemlich gewagt) drin, die von Künstlern wie Jerry Reed, Eddie Kochak, Billy Grammer, Art Neville, Bill Haley, Bobby Freeman oder Jo Ann Campbell mit viel Witz zu oft höchst originellen Songs geformt wurden. Fleißig wurde in Märchenbücher geschmökert, bei musikalischen Vorbildern geräubert und Bekanntes wurde erfolgreich interpretiert, man denke nur an den Jazz-Klassiker Caravan von Juan Tizol/Duke Ellington, das in dieser Sammlung alleine dreimal auftaucht. The Polk Brothers haben 1958 einen feinen Caravan Rock daraus gemacht, The Fendermen haben 1962 im damals populären klirrenden Gitarren-Sound die Karawane schier galoppieren lassen, und Drummer Bobby Christian 1959 hat mit betörendem nonverbalem weiblichen Choral und einem Gitarristen auf den Spuren Duane Eddys eine veritable Harems-Nummer daraus geformt.

Apropos Harem: Die Cover-Illustration stimmt gefährlich lüstern darauf ein, am Ende des Booklets darf die in Deutschland durch „Der Tiger von Eschnapur“ bekannt gewordene Debra Paget ein wenig Appetit machen und die legendäre Burlesque-Ikone Betty Page schmückt die CD-Rückseite mit sexy Hüftschwung. Sven T. Uhrmann und Stefan Kohne haben neben den Filmplakaten im Innenteil des 28seitigen Booklets das wunderbar typische Bildmaterial ausgesucht und bearbeitet. Besungen, bzw. beklimpert wird der Harem übrigens nur einmal von The Slaves in Hari's Harem. Keine Nummer zum Träumen.

Aber Scheichs und Oasen gibt es, Alibaba gleich dreimal von The Champs (1958), Preston Love (1955), The Sandpipers (schöne Nummer 1966), dazu Sindbad und Aladin, man bewegt sich in Persien (In A Persian Market und Princess Of Persia), der Türkei (Turkish Doghouse Rock und Istanbul) und in Arabien rauf und runter.

The Colts besingen 1957 in einer feinen Vokalnummer grandios The Sheik of Araby, ein bereits 1922 komponiertes Stück, das 1960 durch die Version von Fats Domino bekannter, aber nicht besser wurde.
Daß das alles zwangsläufig zu kuriosen Klangbildern und Texten (z.B. Turkish Doghouse Rock) führt ist auf diesem Sampler reichlich zu finden, eine CD, die viel Spaß macht. Das beigegebene Booklet mit vielen Abbildungen, sorgfältigen Recherchen und Texten von The Sheik rundet die Sache perfekt.

Ein wunderbar einmaliger und geradezu erstaunlicher, exotischer R’n‘R-Trip.

In der Wüste lebt man allein von der Hoffnung auf die nächste Oase. Unvorstellbar ist hingegen auf den unendlichen Sanddünen ein Rock’n’Roll-Geflüster.

Dennoch hat die „Bear Family“ 32 Lieder aus diesem herausgebuddelt, die aus der Mitte der Fünfzigerjahre bis Mitte der Sechzigerjahre stammen und deren Rhythmen exotisch sowie deren Geschichten von eben jenen fernen Orten handeln.

Die Songs sind dementsprechend mit ´Caravan Rock´, ´Rockin‘ In Bagdad´, ´One Arabian Night´, ´Come With Me To The Casbah´, ´Turkish Doghouse´, ´Ahab The Arab´ oder ´Sinbad´ betitelt und werden von Bill Haley and his Comets, Jerry Reed, Art Neville, Dinah Washington und Big Maybelle, The Fendermen und The Polk Brothers vorgetragen.

Ein wunderbar einmaliger und geradezu erstaunlicher, exotischer R’n‘R-Trip.
