In September 1962, the only Beatles records in stores were the ones on which they accompanied Tony Sheridan on a souped-up version of "My Bonnie." Their debut single, "Love Me Do," was released in October 1962, and the seismic change they brought to the music world would occur when the band reached light speed in 1963. Before Beatlemania, however, there was already a thriving music culture anchored in several ports. The proto-pop charts may have been dominated by Cliff and his Shadows, crooners, and sweet-faced pop idols brushing their teeth, but R&B was slowly making its way onto record shelves, either through imports or a growing number of domestic cover versions. The Motown sound took root in Detroit and was already making inroads into the UK via poor-selling 7" singles from London and Fontana. The twist may be considered an old dance, but in political circles, no one twisted in the wind more than John Profumo, who was exposed in 1961 for a love triangle in which the other two parties were Christine Keeler and a Russian spy. Politicians and the establishment lived by the dictum "Do as I say, not as I do." Until they were caught with their pants down. It was a situation Patrick McGoohan always avoided in Danger Man, although after 1963 part of the appeal of James Bond on screen was that he could drop his pants and sleep with Russian spies. The claim that no good music was recorded in the UK before the Beatles, the Stones, the Who and the blues explosion is not true. There were many great records in 1960, 1961 and 1962. You just had to find the gems. The problem with the Beatles and the coverage of their music was that they formed a musical dam that covered a reservoir that covered earlier audio mounds that were swamped by time and history. Why would you care about Ottilie Patterson singing the blues if you had "Please Please Me"? Why would anyone care about Chris Farlowe's "Air Travel" if they had "I Want To Hold Your Hand"? While 60 years later the Beatles' music is endlessly recycled, much of the music recorded between 1960 and 1963 goes unnoticed and submerged. But as you'll discover on "A Snapshot in Time," there were some cracking gems like the R&B swagger of the Blue Flames' "Orange Street," Lynne Cornell's "Moanin" and Sounds Inc's "Sounds Like Locomotion." Even better, they sound fresh and invigorating, showing that the '60s swung earlier than everyone would have you believe.
