New Musical Express. Before "Saturday Night Fever" hit, there was already underground disco. DJs all over America went out and found the right music, dancers went out and found the clubs. At that time, in the early seventies, disco was still the venue and not a music genre.

The sampler "Tribal Rites Of The New Saturday Night" is the soundtrack to the story that began in disco and pays homage to the underground clubs of Brooklyn and Queens. Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley has reassembled this collection, researching what was actually played in Brooklyn clubs in 1974 and 1975. "Supernatural Thing Part 1" by Ben E. King or "Wake Up Everybody" by Harold Melvin were cosmically great and both are included here, alongside underground favorites like "Helplessly" by Moment Of Truth or Ivano Fossati's incredible "Night Of The Wolf" has fans in northern soul, disco and prog circles.
