All the recordings on this CD album are cut with his exquisite band, the Playboys, whose wild sounds provided the perfect backdrop for Taylor's extravagant stage shows.

Like almost no other contemporary, Vince Taylor embodies the early heyday of British rock 'n' roll. Borrowing from the sound and stage show of his great idol Gene Vincent, he began copying U.S. originals in the late 1950s. But he took the next step and recorded immortal classics like Brand New Cadilac and later Jet Black Machine.

Vince Taylor's myth is based on his wild, ecstatic live performances, which in those late fifties days must have eclipsed anything seen or heard up to that time. Like no other, he brought the energy and charisma of his idols like Elvis Presley or Gene Vincent to the stage. Dressed in leather gear, he raged across the stage, accompanied by his Playboys, the perfect backing band for him. They pushed him with their hard sound and brought the auditorium to a boil!

Some see him as a forefather of punk - but for sure, the rocker, who was popular and successful not only in Great Britain but also in France and Benelux, was one of the wildest guys of his time.

Amazingly, Vince Taylor has managed to reproduce the power of his live shows in the studio. We wish you a good time with the great legend of British rock, Vince Taylor!

Vince Taylors Legende basiert weitgehend auf seiner 1950er Aufnahme von'Brand New Cadillac' - oft als die größte britische Rockabilly-Platte aller Zeiten bezeichnet. Brand New Cadillac' behält seinen Nervenkitzel und wurde 1979 von The Clash auf ihrem Album'London Calling' gecovert. Der Clash gab dem'Brand Now Cadillac' ein hippes Lob. Doch Vince, der noch am Leben war, konnte das wiederauflebende Interesse einer neuen Generation von Fans nicht ausnutzen. Er war einfach zu weit gegangen.

Vince Taylor Pepin wurde im Juli 1930 in Middlesex, England geboren. 1946 wanderte seine Familie in die USA aus und ließ sich in New Jersey nieder. Seine ältere Schwester Sheila heiratete 1955 Joe Barbera von Hanna-Barbera und die Familie Holden folgte ihr nach Los Angeles. Brian schrieb sich an der Hollywood High School ein und wurde schnell in Rockabilly verliebt. Er versuchte eine Gesangskarriere mit Joe Barbera als Manager zu starten. In Verlust lud Barbera den Teenager ein, den Hinweis auf eine Geschäftsreise nach London zu begleiten, um sich das lokale Musikstück anzusehen. Brian wurde in die'2 I's' Coffee Bar in der Old Compton St. in Soho geleitet.

Das'2 I's war die Startrampe, auf der viele der britischen Rockabilly-Sänger und lokalen Musiker von diesem großen, gutaussehenden Amerikaner beeindruckt waren. Brian gründete eine Band, gewann schnell einen Parlophone-Aufnahmevertrag und änderte seinen Namen in Vince Taylor und taufte seine Band The Playboys.

Vince Taylor & The Playboy's 1958er Singles'I Like Love', Right Behind You Baby' und'Pledging My Love' konnten die britischen Pop-Charts nicht stören und Parlophone beendete seinen Plattenvertrag. Die B-Seite von'Pledging My Love' war'Brand Now Cadillac', ein Original-Song von Taylor, der so hart rockte wie die besten US-Rockabilly-Platten und ein knisterndes Gitarrensolo von Joe Moretti (der auch das Solo auf Johnny Kidd & The Pirates's phänomenalem'Shakin' All Over' spielte). Taylor - in schwarzes Leder gekleidet und extrem selbstbewusst, erwies sich als talentierte Live-Performer und zog ein treues Publikum in ganz Großbritannien an.

Bear Family continues to bring us interesting releases featuring the most important English rock artists and has now reached the eighth edition, bringing us Vince Taylor's best tracks in "The Brits Are Rocking". The album includes recordings made from 1958 to 62 for the Parlophone, Palette and Barclay record labels. Vince fulfilled all the clichés of the wild rocker like no other European in the late 50s and early 60s. His attributes included the leather clothing à la Gene Vincent, the wild and often outlandish stage shows, drug use and his unbridled temperament. Like his idol Gene Vincent, Taylor was extremely successful on the continent, particularly in France and the Benelux countries. All the recordings on this CD album feature him with his exquisite band, the Playboys, whose wild sounds provided the perfect backdrop for Taylor's extravagant stage shows. Among the best tracks I count the opening with "Brand New Cadillac", which is an original composition from 1959, "Jet Black Machine" then follows a long series of covers that hold up well with for example "Baby, Let's Play House", "Rocky Road Blues", "Sweet Little Sixteen", "Lovin' Up A Storm", "I Like Love" to name a few. The text in the accompanying booklet is detailed and well written by Ashley Woods with nice pictures and a detailed session discography in good old Bear Family style.

I cannot get enough of this series

Discovering forgotten British rockers like Vince Taylor is always a fascinating glimpse into the beginnings of British Rock and Roll. His first-hand contact with the American movement separates him musically, shown through his accent. vocal style and energy, making him a unique figure from this time period. Bear Family Records have compiled an album that celebrates this rocker, from all sides, and shines an overdue spotlight on his short-lived career.
