The Petards: A Deeper Blue (LP, 180gram Vinyl)

- The first volume  ,in our series with 1:1 vinyl re-issues of the four original Petards albums.
- One of the most popular and successful German beat and rock bands.
- The first album of the group, originally released in 1967.
- New edition - re-mastered, comes with original cover, additional inlay and English liner notes.

In their early days, The Petards (French: firecrackers) were regarded the third force on the German scene behind The Rattles and The Lords - with the decisive difference that they did not come from a major city like Hamburg or Berlin like their rivals but from the tranquil community of Schrecksbach in Oberhessen in the mid-eastern part of West Germany. No big city media behind them, no urban club scene around them, far and near no record company office, let alone professional artist or tour management. ,

The Petards stood for province, deepest province, although it is often ignored that even today most people still live in rural areas. It was the same in 1964 when the two brothers Klaus and Horst Ebert (both: vocals, guitars, keyboards) with Roger Waldmann (bass) and Hans-Jürgen Schreiber (drums) set out to mix up the German rock world. The band compensated the geographical disadvantage with unbelievable ambition, diligence and determination. No village pub or marquee was left out in the following years, The Petards have earned their audience, and that should finally pay off. In addition, the band had two exceptionally talented musicians with the brothers Ebert, especially Klaus as composer of almost all Petards titles stood out, while Horst contributed most of the lyrics and took care of the band management. ,

,In 1966 the band went to Osnabrück to record the first two singles (45s), Baby Run, Run, Run, Run / Pretty Miss and Right Time / She Didn't for the CCA label of Hans-Werner Kuntze in two sessions in August and December, which were distributed throughout Germany via Metronome and brought the band its first national recognition. In 1967 the decisive course was set for The Petards. With the new drummer Arno Dittrich the band performed in March in the national TV show, 'ZDF-Drehscheibe' in front of an audience of millions, one month later The Petards already had 58(!) registered fan clubs. The TV appearance in the SWF 'Talentschuppen' in June 1967 brought the band their final breakthrough. ,

The jury for this extremely popular music show also included producer Bert Varell, who summed up the performance of the Petards as follows: ''Your performance was a bang. Not only we judges, but also the competing artists were enraptured by the vitality, the speed, the tough sound of these four guys. Six weeks later we met again in the studio in Maschen near Hamburg. To produce this disc. A Deeper Blue.’’

A Deeper Blue' was recorded between August 15th and 18th, 1967 under the direction of Bert Varell. The band was well prepared and quickly recorded the 12 titles from the pen of the two Ebert brothers. The songs corresponded to the typical Beatles pop sound of the time with slight psychedelia influences. Short and very catchy.

Varell placed the record with the low-budget label Europa, which at the time used a sensational marketing trick. ’A Deeper Blue' was released in autumn 1967 at an unbeatable price of DM 5.00 per record and sold over 100,000 copies in no time. For the debut record of a German band an almost unbelievably high run! ,

Bear Family re-issues this album for the first time on vinyl since it originally came out in 1967. It comes with the original artwork, is pressed on 180 gram vinyl, and we have added the reproduction of the original autograph card to 'A Deeper Blue', plus English liner notes. This record is the first of four scheduled vinyl re-releases by the Petards.

The Petards

THE PETARDS IN A FAST COURSE

They loved making music and shared a common vision and the will to realize it. They revealed surprising abilities and talents with which they almost lasted for a few years for themselves and for the entire Upper Hessian region.

She achieved many of her early goals: Well over 1000 performances, 100,000 sold copies of the 1st LP, repeated tours abroad, No 1 hits, LP release in Japan etc. Only the biggest wish: they were denied a number 1 in the USA. The story of the Petards is a very unusual success story, even if the Schrecksbacher firecrackers never became intercontinental rockets...

They not only had more ideas than most of their rock colleagues, they also implemented them permanently themselves:

They offered a sovereign stage choreography.
They designed their own stage clothes and had them sewn.
They were the first band in the country with an ingenious lightshow (incl. strobe lights). The individual parts for this were purchased from the Kassel-based electrical trade.
They were the first band to distribute stickers with their own logo (and other promotional material anyway).
They built up a network of 380, mostly really active fan clubs, which made them as popular as they are today only possible via MTV/Viva.
They repeatedly exchanged the concert stage with a theater stage
They organized the legendary Herzberg festivals, at which German pop mainstream met the underground for the first time.
To top it all off, Arno delivered his incomparable drum solo every evening at his shooting range with two bass drums (New!).

Eventually they were overtaken by the times, the spirit of the times, the growing competition (with hair, musicians & managers & connections), sometimes even overtaken: For some years they set the bar very high for other bands. They consistently fulfilled their demands, which many an alternative Krautrock/Underground band failed to meet:

They were absolutely independent.
They wrote their own plays.
They were their own road managers for a long time.
The man on the rhythm guitar was the manager.
The man on bass was the fan support.
They designed their own logo, posters and record covers themselves.
They were also as professionals their own promoters, organized many appearance from A - Z themselves.

Actually, this band shouldn't have had any success, because they were carrying around some handicaps. It speaks for them that they took them away effortlessly for years:

The Petards had no manager, no connections in the music business, no role model to copy.
They were, albeit ambitious, yet isolated boys from the deepest province.
Two band members were objectively seen very moderate musicians.
Two band members wore toupees from the beginning because of their sparse hair growth. (A phenomenon that is still rare in rock history.)

With this CD edition of their total output, 25 years after the end of the band, a late happy ending is delivered.

Let's go back to the beginning....
