Udo Jürgens was born on 30 September 1934 in Klagenfurt, Austria and grew up together with his brothers at Schloss Ottmanach in Carinthia. He studied piano, harmony, composition and singing at the Kärntner Landeskonservatorium in Klagenfurt and at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. In 1950 Udo Jürgens won a composer competition of the ORF. He gained his first stage experience at the Tanzcafé Lerch, where he was engaged as a jazz singer. In 1956 Udo Jürgens got his first record contract and he mainly sang hits of other authors. First successes were his recordings "Der lachende Vagabund" and with the Octavios "Hejo, hejo, Gin und Rum" and "Peppino".

In 1959 he was successful with the self composed song "Jenny". In 1960 he won the Knokke Songfestival for Germany. With "Kiss Me Quick" he achieved his first Top Ten success in 1963 (3rd place). Seventeen years, blond hair" followed in 1965 with the second top ten hit (4th place). In 1966 he won the Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson with the song "Merci Chérie".

In the following decades dozens of further successes followed. Udo Jürgens has sold over 100 million records in his almost 60-year career, making him one of the most successful singers in the German-speaking world.

On 21 December 2014, Udo Jürgens died unexpectedly of heart failure during a walk on Lake Constance. His voice and his songs remain unforgotten.

This double CD contains 50 of his early recordings, which already give an idea of the quality of his later hits.
