•At the height of the calypso craze in Europe, Jamaica Johnny released a number of plates in the Netherlands.

•Liefeld was born in Surinam. He never visited Jamaica nor Trinidad.

•This CD album brings together a total of 28 Calypso recordings made between 1957 and 1961 in the Netherlands for the Phillips company.

•Cover versions of popular tunes and originals as well as songs for commercials of a brewery!

Jamaica Johnny was Cornelis Lionel Liefeld's nickname.Liefeld was born in 1919 in Paramaribo, the capital of Surinam, a small state on the northeast coast of South America - a Dutch colony until 1954, then a member of the Dutch Kingdom until final independence in 1975. During the Second World War he joined the Dutch Navy and was stationed in the Netherlands after the end of the war. Attracted by Amsterdam's lively music and cultural scene, he left the army and became a singer in the band of his compatriot Max Woiski. In the mid-50s he went into business for himself as Jamaica Johnny and formed his own band, the Milagro Boys. Now he sang Calypso in English at the height of the Calypso craze.

With his band he mostly performed in the Netherlands, but he also toured other European countries, especially in Scandinavia, where he was able to recruit a large fan base.

Besides his own versions of popular Calypso numbers, Jamaica Johnny wrote new songs himself and regularly recorded for Phillips - and he even recorded Calypsos for commercials of the Amstel Brewery.

In the early 6o's Cornelis L. Liefeld founded a family in the Netherlands and left show business. From then on he worked in the automobile industry, among others. He died in 1993.

Producer Nico Feuerbach, with the great support of our Dutch trainee Akout Valentino, located Cornelis Liefeld's son, who was able to close many information gaps.

The Dutch records of Jamaica Johnny apparently sold well back then and are another example of the range of international calypso madness in the late fifties, which was by no means limited to the USA, and show Jamaica Johnny as the leading representative of the genre in the Netherlands.

Fantastic release

I met Jamaica Johnny and his band in Oslo in 1960 (I was 11). They were actually invited to our home. I have nice pictures from the event. My father playing guitar and Jamaica Johnny the bongos, a.o. Finally after so many years it's pure joy for me to have a complete album of his recordings. Thanks a lot Bear Family!

Deze mooie 2-CD set maakte mijn dag!! Ik had nooit verwacht de opnames van Jamaica Johnny op CD te vinden! Wat een geweldig onderzoek heb je gedaan naar dit project! Je hebt zelfs Jamaica Johnny's 'Amstel' commerciële opnames opgenomen! Zeer indrukwekkende liner notes en veel informatie over de geschiedenis van Calypso in Nederland! Hartelijk dank! Als je Jamaica Johnny niet kent - hij is vergelijkbaar met Harry Belafonte en een must have voor elke Calypso en wereldmuziekverzamelaar!
This nice 2-CD set made my day!! I've never expected to find the recordings of Jamaica Johnny on CD! What a great research you did on this project! You even included Jamaica Johnny's 'Amstel' commercial recordings! Very impressive liner notes and a lot on information about the history of Calypso in The Netherlands! Thank you very much! If you don't know Jamaica Johnny - he is comparable to Harry Belafonte and a must have for every Calypso and world music collector!

Wel vrienden, dat is om twee redenen. Wij houden wel degelijk van een potje calypso op tijd en stond, allemaal de schuld van filmacteur Robert Mitchum met wiens LP Calypso Is Like So uit 1957 het is begonnen voor ons, maar tegenwoordig kunnen wij zelfs Harry Belafonte naar waarde schatten. Ten tweede: Jamaica Johnny heeft nooit één voet in Jamaica of Trinidad gezet maar kwam via Suriname gewoon uit ons eigen koude kikkerlandje! De in 1919 in de Surinaamse hoofdstad Paramaribo geboren Cornelis Lionel Liefeld ging in de tweede wereldoorlog bij de Koninklijke Marine, werd na de bevrijding gestationeerd in Katwijk, en trok van Katwijk naar Amsterdam waar hij ging zingen in het orkest van de eveneens Surinaams-Nederlandse Max Woiski Sr (BB met R oftewel Bruine Bonen Met Rijst, een hit in 1950).
