Some Questions you may have about the new Fats Domino box set.

Q:  I have the old Fats Domino Box on Bear Family which was released 25 years ago. Why should I buy this box?
A: It’s been upgraded and increased in size (12 CDs - 312 tracks versus 8 in the old box; 240-page book versus 60 in the 1993 box). Much new material has been added including unreleased alt takes, undubbed and unedited masters, and instrumental backing tracks.

Also for the first time anywhere we present some of Fats’s biggest hits as they were originally recorded, not sped-up for release. The completely revised book contains a wealth of previously unpublished images, track-by-track musical commentary by the producers, as well as updated and extended notes by Fats biographer Rick Coleman. The box also includes an acclaimed video documentary on Fats’s life and music.

Q: Isn’t this new box very expensive?
A: Not for what it is. On top of that, Bear Family has set an unprecedented introductory price as well as a 20% discount until July 31. Remember, this project took years to complete and thousands of hours. Sure, there is a lot of cheap Fats Domino product out there – and it looks and sounds it. The book production here, the pictures, the remastering, the background story – these are available nowhere else.

And we licensed primary sources to master from. None of these were cheap. Putting it simply: the music sounds much better on this box set than it ever has before due to the brilliant remastering from the original tapes. Second, the book that we include is much better – in terms of both the writing and the images – than anything anyone has done before, Bear Family included. The new box set is actually a bargain – especially if you take advantage of the introductory discounted price.

Q: You mentioned songs in different speeds? Please explain that to me.
A: Many of Fats’s biggest hits were artificially sped up for release to make him sound more “youthful”. This box includes both the familiar sped up versions and never-before-heard authentic versions.

Q: How many of the Fats songs were sped up?
A: Twenty-seven songs were originally released sped up as singles. But once Imperial had success with the new sped-up version of Fats, they began to speed-up old recordings when they appeared as “filler” on LPs. It took a lot of sleuth-work and engineering to get things right.

Q: Who did the speed up on Fats, his producers or the record company?
A: Imperial Records authorized it. But the speed-ups were proposed and carried out by the sound engineer where the records were mastered, a man named Abraham “Bunny” Robyn.

Q: Why were the songs sped up in the first place?
A: “Bunny” Robyn thought some of Fats’s records sounded “logey” – not lively enough -- and convinced Lew Chudd at Imperial to let him try doing it. The first record he sped up was Ain’t It a Shame, a huge success.

Q: Do I get all the Fats Domino songs I love?
A: If they were recorded for Imperial and ABC-Paramount, yes you do.

Q: As Fats experts know, reissues of “Blueberry Hill” reliably use the patched-together repaired master because of a ruined stretch of tape. What is in this box?
A: We mastered from a pristine copy of the US-issued Imperial 78 rpm release – the only version that didn’t require repair. Blueberry Hill is one of the tracks that got sped up so we also include a repaired version slowed down to its authentic performance speed. Our book discusses this odd episode in Fats’s recording career.

Q: Are all the CDs remastered or is it just the ones that were sped up?
A: Every track in this box has been carefully remastered. You will be delighted and in many cases surprised at how good they sound.

Q: I see there are recordings by other musicians. Why?
A: Early in his career, Fats sometimes worked as a session pianist for other artists like Joe Turner, Lloyd Price and Smiley Lewis. We’ve included some examples of those recordings. In addition, Fats was an incredibly influential performer whose style was often imitated. We include some examples of that as well.

Q: Does the Discography in the new box include complete session information?
A: It contains everything that is known. The Imperial sessions are a lot better documented. Unfortunately, the ABC sessions contain some personnel gaps, but rest assured - you are getting everything that is known.

Q: What about the video? Why is it part of the box?
A: We were fortunate enough to secure the rights to the widely acclaimed PBS documentary about Fats and his place in rock & roll history. It includes interviews with Dave Bartholomew and legendary New Orleans recording engineer Cosimo Matassa.

Q: I’ve heard there is a longer “director’s cut” of the documentary.  Do I get that too?
A: Yes, you do. Both are on the DVD.

Q: Who are the producers, Hank Davis and Scott Parker?
A: They are musicians and rock & roll historians who have loved Fats’s music for over 60 years. They have been involved in the production of more than 50 projects for Bear Family Records.

We could have taken the easy way out. The original 1993 box set was out of stock. We could simply have printed more copies and filled orders.

Of course, we didn’t. This is Bear Family Records and we don’t take shortcuts. We’ve invested more than 1000 hours in re-writing, recompiling and re-mastering this box. The brilliant engineering by Christian Zwarg will leave you shaking your head in admiration. You won’t quite recognize some of your favorite Fats Domino tracks because they’ve never sounded this good.

We’ve found a lot of new material – some things that were thought to be lost and other things that nobody knew existed. We have alternate takes that have never before been issued.  We’ve got new unedited and non-overdubbed versions of some familiar Fats songs and newly discovered overdubs of familiar songs. We’ve got the intact recording of Blueberry Hill without the tape glitch. We’ve got previously unreleased backing tracks. We’ve also included some examples of Fats working as a session pianist for other artists (including Joe Turner, Lloyd Price and Smiley Lewis) early in his career. And to show how influential Fats’s style was, we’ve included some examples of other performers imitating Fats during his Golden Era.

But the biggest news concerns the Speed-up. Everybody knows that some of Fats’s Imperial records were speeded up for release, making them both faster and pitched in higher keys. But how many of them? And which ones? And just how much were they speeded up? And, in case you wondered, how was it done back in 1955 and by whom? We didn’t have as good a handle on those questions when the original box set was compiled back in 1993, and we sure didn’t know the answers. But we do now. And we admit, back 25 years ago we screwed up some of the speeds on our original box. And when other companies tried to fix things with their Fats Domino reissues, they made their own mistakes and just added to the mess.

But now the mess is over. A lot of those 1000+ hours went into getting speeds exactly right so we can truly present Fats’s music as it was originally released. But what is completely new here is that we also present, for the first time anywhere, examples of Fats’s Greatest Hits as they were originally performed in the studio, at their original speeds and in their real keys. No speed-up. You can be a fly on the wall and hear songs like Ain’t It A Shame and I’m Walking as they actually sounded in Cosimo’s New Orleans studio. That addition alone makes this Box a landmark event.

A lot has also gone into updating and revising the accompanying, lavishly illustrated book by Fats biographer Rick Coleman, and by music historians Hank Davis and Scott Parker. That includes an updated Fats Domino Imperial Records Discography. And what’s more, we extended the Box to include two CDs with all of Fats post-Imperial recordings for the ABC Paramount label. Twelve CDs in all – an upgrade of 50% from the original box.

Even if you bought the first Bear Family box 25 years ago, Fats Domino: I’ve Been Around is a must for any serious Fats Domino collection. It’s not going to get any better than this.

Fats Domino Obituary

Like the great Louis Armstrong before him, Fats Domino was a perfect ambassador for New Orleans music.

Even at the height of the mid-‘50s rock and roll explosion, when Elvis and Chuck Berry were scaring the bejeezus out of parents with their primal rhythms and suggestive stage antics, Fats was a cherubic presence when seated behind a piano with a sweet smile on his face and a fat horn section by his side. No wonder he was one of the era’s most prolific and universally accepted hitmakers; with trumpeter/bandleader Dave Bartholomew as his co-writer and producer, Domino unleashed an incredible run of hits on Imperial Records that were irresistible to teenagers and their parents alike. Fats always did the Crescent City proud.

Domino, who died at the age of 89 in his beloved home in Harvey, Jefferson Parrish in New Orleans, Louisiana, at night on the 24th of October 2017, had been ailing in recent years after surviving the wrath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 (he had to be rescued from his Ninth Ward home, which was utterly devastated). But prior to his hea

lth woes, Fats never stopped rocking like it was 1957 all over again, always fronting a rollicking band soaked in second-line rhythms and jabbing horns. Domino never seemed like he was just going through the motions; whenever he launched into his raucous set closer When The Saints Go Marching In, it was instant Mardi Gras time.

Antoine Domino

Born February 26, 1928 in the Big Easy, Antoine Domino, Jr. was a shy lad of Creole descent who spoke French before he learned English. Influenced by boogie piano specialists Albert Ammons (whose Swanee River Boogie became one of Domino’s enduring showpieces), Meade Lux Lewis, and Amos Milburn, Fats was given his nickname by bassist Billy Diamond, whose band he played with at the Hideaway Club beginning in 1946. Domino was making a name in his own right by ’49, when he met Bartholomew, who brought Imperial owner Lew Chudd to the Hideaway to check out the promising newcomer. The end result was a record contract that would make immense profits for the label and Domino as it stretched for more than a decade.

The Fat Man
, a cleaned-up adaptation of Champion Jack Dupree’s Junker Blues, was Domino’s Imperial debut and just missed the top of the R&B hit parade in early 1950. Fats achieved R&B stardom long before rock and roll reared its impudent head, scoring major hits with Every Night About This Time (1950), Goin’ Home, Going To The River (both 1952), and Please Don’t Leave Me and Something’s Wrong (both 1953). Everything changed when Domino released the stop-time rocker Ain’t It A Shame in 1955.

Typically a Domino/Bartholomew collaboration, it not only paced the R&B charts but went Top Ten pop despite a Pat Boone cover. Rock and roll was exploding all over, and Fats was one of the rowdy music’s first true heroes. Of course, having a crack band at his behest whenever he ventured into Cosimo Matassa’s studio in the French Quarter sure didn’t hurt. Herbert Hardesty, who was prominently featured with Domino’s band for decades, took the lion’s share of the sax solos on Domino’s hits, with studio stalwart Lee Allen handling the rest.

Domino was a rock and roll superstar

For the rest of the decade, Domino was a rock and roll superstar, thanks to blockbusters that included I’m In Love Again, When My Dreamboat Comes Home, Blueberry Hill (his top seller of all), and Blue Monday in 1956, I’m Walkin’ the next year, Whole Lotta Loving in ’58, I’m Ready, I Want To Walk You Home, and Be My Guest in ’59, and the plaintive Walking To New Orleans and My Girl Josephine at the beginning of the new decade. Domino memorably guested in the rock and roll flicks ‘The Girl Can’t Help It,’ ‘Jamboree,’ and ‘The Big Beat,’ headlined countless package shows that barnstormed the U.S. and helped knock down segregation barriers, starred on network TV programs, and remained singularly free of scandal as he loyally doted on his huge family back home when he wasn’t on the road.

After an amazing run on Imperial (all of his masters for the label are available on Bear Family’s eight-CD boxed set ‘Out of New Orleans’), Domino moved over to the ABC-Paramount label in 1963. But by then, the glory years of New Orleans rock and roll were long in the history books. Domino made more platters for Mercury and Reprise, often recording away from his home base, and toured far and wide as the oldies circuit welcomed him with open arms. Eventually Domino decided to retire from the road altogether, limiting his performances to venues that were close to home.

New Orleans was filled with great performers during the ‘50s, but there was only one Fat Man. Monumentally influential to a generation or two of Louisiana musicians (especially the pioneers of the swamp pop movement), he was the very definition of New Orleans rock and roll—as all the gold records adorning his wall during the pre-Katrina days so eloquently attested.

Customer evaluation for "I’ve Been Around - The Complete Imperial and ABC Recordings (12-CD & DVD)"
13 Oct 2019

He made his mark both as a session pianist behind Big Joe Turner, Lloyd Price, and Smiley Lewis (whose work backed by the keyboardist is heard on I’ve Been Around) and as a star in his own right, notching hit after hit with his sunny vocalizing and romping, rolling work on the 88s. He changed American music in the process by crafting universally popular songs that bridged the then seemingly vast chasm between African-American and white audiences. New Orleans bandleader Dave Bartholomew called him the “cornerstone” of rock ’n’ roll. As biographer Rick Coleman noted in Blue Monday: Fats Domino and the Lost Dawn of Rock ’n’ Roll, the musician “[stepped] beyond blues and jazz to the crossroads of a new, wider world that he would help create both musically and socially.” In 1986 he was one of the 10 inaugural inductees in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Press - Fats Domino I’ve Been Around - The Complete Imperial and ABC Recordings - shepherdexpress.com
Press - Fats Domino I’ve Been Around - The Complete Imperial and ABC Recordings - shepherdexpress.com A case could be made for 1948 as the birthdate of rock and roll. "Okie Boogie," recorded that year by The Maddox Brothers and Rose, was western swing stripped to bedrock with a furiously pounding rhythm yanking the usually tragic pedal steel along for a reckless ride. Then again, a track by Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys, "Seven Come Eleven," recorded in 1945 and also included in The Bakersfield Sound, also hints at rockabilly with its fierce slapping rhythm. The Bakersfield Sound is a magnificently authoritative 10-CD box set whose heavily illustrated hardbound book contains artist bios and track-by-track notations. Wills was included in the set for his seminal influence on the country music scene that coalesced in the environs of Bakersfield, Calif. The city was a mecca for Dust Bowl refugees with farm fields and oil wells offering work for any man willing to roll up his sleeves. Honky-tonks were their place of refuge when the workday ended. Bakersfield is recalled as an alternative to Nashville, and during the 1960s, it challenged the Tennessee town as country music's capital. All of the folks whose recordings are collected here had aspirations of popularity, and some made it. To generalize the difference with Nashville, the Bakersfield boys (and several gals) were proud of their authentically rural roots and had no interest in hiding them behind slickly conceived pop arrangements.

Press - Fats Domino I’ve Been Around - The Complete Imperial and ABC Recordings - offbeat.com Bear Family Records is releasing a new box set, I’ve Been Around, which offers access to 312 tracks from the New Orleans singer-pianist Fats Domino. The set includes Domino’s work with Imperial Records (recordings from 1948-1962) and–collected for the first time in a Bear Family Records set–Domino’s ABC-Paramount Records sessions (recordings from 1963-1965). Also included are originally unreleased takes, undubbed masters and unreleased instrumental backing tracks, making this set a must-have for any collectors interested in Domino’s life and work. Besides Domino’s iconic music, I’ve Been Around includes both a 60-minute and 90-minute cut of the PBS American Masters documentary Fats Domino and the Birth of Rock ’n’ Roll, which was released in 2016 and includes interviews with the late Dave Bartholomew and Crescent City studio owner Cosimo Matassa. The set also includes a 240-page full-color book, filled with updated notes by biographer Rick Coleman, commentary by producers Hank Davis and Scott Parker, a complete Domino sessionography and a collection of previously unpublished pictures. During the 1950s, Domino was the first R&B artist to gain recognition by the younger generation, bridging the gap between African-American and white audiences. By leaving indelible marks on the history of music–such as “Ain’t it a Shame,” “I’m in Love Again,” “Blue Monday,” “Blueberry Hill” and “I’m Walkin’”–Domino was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. On Oct. 24, 2017, Domino died at his home in Harvey, LA at the age of 89.

The film — which includes interviews with the late Dave Bartholomew and Crescent City engineer and studio owner Cosimo Matassa — was directed by Joe Lauro and written by Lauro and Rick Coleman. Befitting the wide, deep scope of the set and reflecting Bear Family’s longstanding commitment to quality presentation, I’ve Been Around includes a full-color, hardcover, large-format book of 240 pages. It contains updated and extended notes by biographer Coleman; track-by-track commentary by producers Hank Davis and Scott Parker (who have been involved in more than 50 Bear Family projects); a comprehensive Domino Imperial sessionography and the most complete ABC-Paramount discography available to date; and many previously unpublished images. In its dimensions and clothbound elegance, the box replicates the packaging of two previously released, widely acclaimed Bear Family boxes devoted to a pair of Domino’s fellow inaugural Rock Hall inductees: Chuck Berry’s Rock and Roll Music Any Old Way You Choose It, which compiled the singer-songwriter-guitarist’s complete studio recordings, and Jerry Lee Lewis’ What the Hell Else Do You Need?, the most extensive collection ever produced of the singer-pianist’s Sun Records material.

Press - Fats Domino I’ve Been Around - The Complete Imperial and ABC Recordings - the second disc
Press - Fats Domino I’ve Been Around - The Complete Imperial and ABC Recordings - the second disc Get ready to find your thrill, as Bear Family Records has announced the ultimate tribute to singer, pianist, and rock-and-roll pioneer Fats Domino. The new 12CD/1DVD box set I’ve Been Around is due on November 8. It’s packed with 312 tracks including all of Domino’s recordings for Imperial Records, the label on which he made his name and recorded his biggest hits from 1948-1962, and ABC-Paramount Records, where he continued turning out stellar work between 1963-1965. This being a Bear Family box, it also features a treasure trove of originally unreleased alternate takes, undubbed and unedited masters, and backing tracks. With his brash, joyful piano pounding, New Orleans native Antoine “Fats” Domino Jr. was one of the first “crossover” artists to bridge the divide between R&B and pop in the 1950s. It’s no surprise that he was one of the first ten inductees in the first class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as he was a major influence on such artists as Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Elton John, Bobby Darin, and Randy Newman. All 61 of his R&B chart hits (including nine No. 1s) are present on Bear Family’s box, including his 37 top 40 crossover hits. These songs are still as familiar today as they were six decades ago: “Ain’t It a Shame,” “Blue Monday,” “I’m Walkin’,” and of course, “Blueberry Hill.” The original master tape to the latter, a No. 1 R&B/No. 2 pop smash, is badly damaged, but is presented in superior sound here as derived from a clean, original 78 RPM disk.
