Ghalia Volt cannot be overlooked. She is the born rock goddess in a leather jacket who smiles angrily as she offers you something high-proof from the flask in the back pocket. But what really tastes of the south are the songs. After her breakthrough album Let The Demons Out from 2017 came along with a lot of New Orleans flair, the singer and songwriter born in Brussels as Ghalia Vauthier now dives even deeper into the musical traditions of the American South. She travelled to the famous Hill County region of Mississippi, where a group of renowned musicians from the area performed their songs at blazing temperatures. This is Mississippi Blend: an album as fiery and potent as black liquor from the Delta.

Only a recording studio was possible. The Zebra Ranch studio in Coldwater, Mississippi - headquarters of award-winning producer Jim Dickinson - is a leading address for old-school production. Titans such as T-Model Ford and R. L. Burnside have already been immortalized here. "My main goal on this album was to create a natural sound that was influenced by Hill County, punk and garage and rock'n'roll, which was my starting point as a musician. I don't try to imitate any style, but trust my songs as a driving force."

This flask in the back pocket? Go ahead and grab it. What's in it is definitely something in it. Just like Mississippi Blend - a roots cocktail that pops like no other album you'll hear this year. The singer sums up her enthusiasm for it: "I can hardly wait to present this album live".
