In the early 1960s, an instrumental electric guitar rock sound emerged that alluded to the Californian surfing trend. This sunny world, a symbol of freedom associated with swimsuits, big waves and tanned athletes, soon inspired songs on the subject. Bruno Blum reflects on the roots and birth of surf rock and its precursors by introducing and commenting on compelling recordings by Sol Ho'opi'i from Hawaii, Chet Atkins, Duane Eddy and some early surf rockers like The Ventures, Dick Dale and The Revels. And, of course, vocal groups like The Beach Boys, who initially sang about the world of surfing, which is an essential part of the American myth.
