Critics and fans were unanimous: Volume One of this series (BCD 15801) was an eye-opener and a revelation in the way it told the Sun Records story release-by-release. Here's the heart of Sun's golden era. Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Warren Smith, and Carl Perkins were the label's stars. It was a revolutionary period, and these are the recordings that shaped modern rock 'n' roll. Essential!

Here we pick up the story, and collectors need only to know that this includes Sun 229 through 278. Here are the great original versions of Blue Suede Shoes, Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On, Oooby Dooby, I Walk The Line, Flying Saucer Rock 'n' Roll etc., as well as classic rockabilly and R&B by Sun's great unknowns. Here too is the first issue of the previously unissued Sun 252 by Kenny Parchman. Incredible photos round out the set.

Sun Records - In the spring of 1952, Sam Phillips risked founding his own record label - Sun Records. He had been an independent producer for several years and recorded the greatest R&B hit of 1951, Jackie Brenston's Rocket 88.

So Sam Phillips knew he had chosen the right job. But would it work with Sun Records, when many independent labels had to close down quickly? It didn't look good at first either. After only two releases on Sun Records there was already a one year break.

But gradually the hits set in: With recordings by Rufus Thomas, the Prisonaires, Junior Parker and of course Elvis Presley. Then there was no stopping. Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Charlie Rich, Roy Orbison, Conway Twitty, Carl Mann, Billy Riley, Warren Smith and many others joined. They have permanently changed the world of pop music.

After the sale of the label Sun Records in 1969 there were countless re-releases of the material. But only Bear Family has always moved at a high quality level. Not every record was a hit, or even deserved to be, but only Motown in the mid-60s ever matched the depth or consistency of Sun in 1956 and 1957. For those two years. Every record Sam Phillips made was touched by a few specks of genius. Expertly annonated by Hank Davis, Bear Family's lavish box set does that genius full justice.

Zur Sorgfalt und Liebe, mit der die Aufnahmen zusammengestellt wurden, habe ich schon bei der ersten Folge geschrieben. Gleiches gilt für das Booklet. Wieder wurde jede einzeln Single mit der A- und B-Seite abgebildet, viel z.T. unbekanntes Bildmaterial ist zu bestaunen. Super Box!
