Autumn. Halloween. Horror. Bear Family Records© presents a CD compilation all about creepy-crawlies: 'Beware! Insects and Spiders'!
With 28 recordings from 1937 to 1966 around 'the big creepy crawlies' the horror comes alive!
Spanning genres, we hear famous artists such as Lionel Hampton, Chubby Checker and Brook Benton as well as lesser-known tunes, some on CD for the first time.
Some instrumentals, a song by Belgian singer Freddy Sunders and an early recording featuring Jimi Hendrix are among the many highlights.
Stylistically, the spectrum ranges from country, surf rock, exotica and pop to rhythm 'n' blues, jazz and swing and a main focus on rock 'n' roll.

The 16-page color booklet includes song annotations by Marc Mittelacher and many often rare photos and memorabilia!

Insects and spiders - a Halloween theme

Imagine ladybugs, butterflies or honeybees and Halloween doesn't exactly come to mind. But have you ever looked at a praying mantis in close-up?

At the latest then you will learn to be creeped out. Such images were used as models for classic horror movies, oversized insects and spiders became song themes, the fear of spiders, one of the primeval fears of mankind, comes to life here.

Tarantula

This handpicked, richly varied compilation presents a wide spectrum of genres of past times, classics, but also many rarities. About a third of the recordings are pure instrumentals, including - as a special highlight - an early recording by Curtis Knight & The Squires, whose lead guitarist was a young Jimi Hendrix!

Guitar virtuoso Buddy Merrill opens the CD album, and from jazzman Lionel Hampton with his orchestra comes the oldest instrumental recording (1937). Extremely annoying flies are sung about by Hank Williams and Chubby Checker, with Martin Denny's Tsetse Fly it turns exotic.

The classic and cult film 'Tarantula' has also left its 'footprint' in the music world and is represented here by no less than four performers. Also a highlight: the piano version of the instrumental classic Bumble Boogie, played at breathtaking speed by the British Winifred Atwell!

The CD comes with a 16-page color booklet containing producer Marc Mittelacher's notes on each song as well as a wealth of illustrations!

Stilvielfalt wie gewohnt!

"Herbst, Halloween und Horror sind drei Säulen, auf denen das Label Bear Family seinen 28 Songs umfassenden Sampler "Beware! Insects And Spiders! 28 Buzzin' Blasters From The Vaults Of Horror" platziert. Nun ja, das Allbum, dessen Inhalt den Zeitraum von 1937 bis 1966 abdeckt, erreichte uns erst vor ein paar Tagen und da war das für den Rezensenten eher neumodische und konsumbehaftete Halloween bereits 'gegessen'. Aber auch der ein paar Tage später stattfindende Brauch, den man im Saarland und Rheinland Pfalz unter dem Namen Rummelbooze kennt, war bereits Vergangenheit. Immerhin ist aber noch Herbst. Und Horror? Nun, Insekten und Arachniden sind mit Sicherheit nichts zum Kuscheln und für sicher nicht Wenige mag der Begriff Horror durchaus mit diesen Krabblern in Verbindung stehen.

Auch wenn einem auf dem Cover des vorliegenden Albums eine Monster-Tarantel anstiert, braucht es einem vor den Songs nicht zu gruseln – auch wenn da das ein oder andere Gesumme, das jedermann bekannte hochfrequente Sirren einer Stechmücke und allerlei andere Kuriositäten zu hören sind. Die Künstler, deren hier präsentierte Stilvielfalt von Swing, Twist, Rock’n’Roll, Country, R&B bis hin zu Poprockigem reicht, sind eher nicht mit Horror in Verbindung zu bringen, wenngleich ein Jimi Hendrix auf dem Plattenteller meiner Jungend bei den Großeltern auch eher als ohrenlästig empfunden wurde.

Ja, der junge Jimi ist hier zu hören, denn Track Nummer zwei, "Hornet’s Nest", ist von Curtis Night & The Squires und in dieser Band war Jimi; der sich damals (1965) noch Jimmy nannte als Leadgitarrist tätig. Und wenn man das weiß und die Ohren auf Hendrix getriggert sind, kann man die leicht psychedelische Gitarrenorgie im Song tatsächlich zuordnen. Jazzer hat es auch, im musikalischen Insektenhotel – Lionel Hampton und Freddy Sunder etwa, wenn Sunders "Cucaracha Boogie" auch eher herrlich swingt und Hampton ebenfalls recht flott (1937) mit den Bienen summt. Die Richtung, die Hank Williams mit seinen Drifting Cowboys in "Fly Trouble" nimmt, ist klar und dass "The Fly" von Chubby Checker rockt und rollt, auch.

Wie von der Bear Family nicht anders gewohnt, informiert das Booklet über jede Nummer und deren Interpreten. Zusammengestellt wurden die Infos samt seltenen Fotos von Marc Mittelacher. Wir erfahren, dass der SF-Horror-Film "Tarantula" aus dem Jahr 1955 und – wie die Namensgeberin auch – in schwarz-weiß mit vier Tracks vertreten ist.

Kurioses wie die "Tsetse Fly" von Martin Denny, "The Spider And The Fly" von Bobby Christian und den Allen Sisters, oder das ebenfalls "The Spider And The Fly" heißende Stück von John Zacherly sind schon starker Tobak. Da sind Sachen wie der rockende "Grasshopper Rock" von Link Davis oder der gemütliche"Boll Weevil Song" von Brook Benton und, und, und doch eher geeignet, die Fliegenklatsche liegen zu lassen.

"Beware! Insects And Spiders! 28 Buzzin' Blasters From The Vaults Of Horror" ist jetzt eher weniger geeignet, um des Öfteren in den Player zu kommen. Vielleicht mal etwas davon spielen, wenn der Besuch nicht gehen will, oder wenn man ihm mal zeigen will, was für Schmankerl im Regal stehen. Vielleicht hilft so mancher Song auch, unfreundlichen Halloween-Klinglern einen verstörten Blick in die Gesichter zu zaubern. Auf jeden Fall ist diese Sammlung ein Beweis, was thematisch alles möglich ist, um auf CD gebrannt zu werden. Und das nächste Halloween kommt mit Sicherheit …"
