Silent Night, Holy Night is regarded as the world's most famous Christmas carol and is recognised by UNESCO as an immaterial cultural heritage in Austria. On Christmas Eve 1818 the song was performed for the first time by the Arnsdorf village school teacher and organist Franz Xaver Gruber to the pastor Joseph Mohr in the Schifferkirche St. Nikola in Oberndorf near Salzburg. In the course of the decades about 300 versions in all languages and dialects were created. The song spread in all Christian countries and became the epitome of the Christmas song par excellence.
This CD contains 25 of the most beautiful classical versions and adaptations of the song Silent Night, Holy Night on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the premiere.
