The CD album delivers all the Italian recordings from 1966/67 for RCA Italiana and its Arc sub-label, including the complete Arc LP 'Ricky Shayne and The Skylarks'.
In addition, there are six songs from 1968, released at the time on Miura, including La Catena, the Italian version of Ich sprenge alle Ketten - all on CD for the first time!
Three German RCA recordings from 1968 as a bonus: Ich sprenge alle Ketten, Du bist zu schön um allein zu sein and Ich kann bei Mädchen keine Tränen seh'n as well as a tribute to Elvis, Chicago (In The Ghetto) from 1969.
The accompanying book provides trilingual liner notes (English, German, Italian) by 'Jamboree Magazine' editor Maurizio Maiotti.

George Albert Tabett - better known as Ricky Shayne - was born in Cairo in 1944, moved to Paris with his mother in 1959, took singing lessons and eventually moved to Italy, where he scored his first Top 10 hit in 1966 with Uno dei Mods.

The CD compilation on Bear Family Records® delivers at its core the complete exciting early Italian recordings from 1966 to '67, gruff, bone-dry beat and rock 'n' roll at its finest! In that early phase of his career, Ricky Shayne & The Skylarks were among the most popular artists in Italy.

Bonus material includes excerpts from the 1968 recordings produced for Italy's Miura label and Germany's RCA. In this country, Ich sprenge alle Ketten became his biggest success in the '60s. The single made it to number 20 in the charts, Ricky Shayne became a teenage heartthrob.

Rounding out the retrospective of Ricky Shayne's early career is a tribute to Elvis Presley, Chicago (In The Ghetto), released in 1969.

The liner notes in the extensive booklet were written by Italian music journalist and editor of Jamboree magazine, Maurizio Maiotti, and are printed in three languages - German, English and Italian. The quality of the transfers, partly from original master tapes, partly from other sources, is excellent.

Ricky Shayne – von wegen Schlagersänger!

"Ricky Shayne, ein englischer Name, ein Musiker, den ich spontan mit einem deutschsprachigen Song in Verbindung bringe, "Ich sprenge alle Ketten" (1967), aber tatsächlich wurde der französisch-libanesischer Sänger als George Albert Tabett am 4. Juni 1944 in Kairo geboren.

Dieses und noch viel mehr erfahren wir aus dem eingehefteten sechsundzwanzig Seiten starken Booklet, abgefasst in drei Sprachen: Italienisch, Englisch und Deutsch.
Die Linernotes hat der italienische Musikjournalist und Herausgeber des Jamboree Magazins, Maurizio Maiotti, geschrieben.

Zunächst hatte er erste Erfolge in Italien, wo er einige Zeit lebte, ein Top Ten-Hit war 1965 "Uno dei Mods", #4 auf dieser Platte. In Deutschland landete er schließlich durch seine Mitwirkung an einem Spielfilm, "Siebzehn Jahr, blondes Haar" mit Udo Jürgens, das war 1966, und erst ein Jahr später sprengte er dann alle Ketten.

Bear Family Records bietet mit dieser dreißig Songs umfassenden Kollektion die kompletten aufregenden frühen italienischen Aufnahmen aus der Zeit von 1966 bis 1967 für RCA Italiana und das Sub-Label Arc, einschließlich der kompletten Arc-LP "Ricky Shayne And The Skylarks", und das war ruppiger, knochentrockener Beat und Rock’n’Roll vom Feinsten! In jener frühen Phase seiner Karriere zählten Ricky Shayne & The Skylarks zu den populärsten Künstlern Italiens. Zum Bonusmaterial zählen Auszüge aus den 1968 produzierten Aufnahmen für das italienische Miura-Label und die deutsche RCA. Hierzulande wurde "Ich sprenge alle Ketten" sein größter Erfolg in den 60er Jahren. Die Single schaffte es bis auf Platz 20 in der Hitparade, Ricky Shayne wurde zum Teenagerschwarm. Ferner gibt es eine Hommage an Elvis Presley, "In Chicago (In The Ghetto)" von 1969.

Gemastert aus Originalquellen ist die Qualität insgesamt als ausgezeichnet zu bezeichnen. Nach einer kurzen Ansage in Italienisch wird die Platte mit einem Blues von Willie Dixon gestartet, italienische Musiker haben nun den Blues. Aufgenommen wurde wahrscheinlich 1966 im RCA Italiana Studio in Rom. Bis einschließlich Track fünfzehn bleiben wir im gleichen Jahr, ausgenommen die aus 1965 stammenden Kompositionen "Uno Dei Mods", "Cosa Pensa De Me", "Vi Saluto Amici Mods" und "Non Ha Prezza L’Amore". Und die Musik bleibt im Modus von Beat, Rock, Rock’n’Roll und ein wenig R&B, aber mit "When The Girl In Your Arms Is The Girl In Your Heart" gibt es auch eine schmachtende Ballade!

Ein bekannter Song stellt sich dann vor mit "Di Me Cosa Ne Sai?", ja, das ist die italienische Version von "Black Is Black" (Los Bravos). Auch "Love Me Tender" musste dran glauben, hier heißt es "Dolcemente" und stammt aus 1967, wahrscheinlich auch in Rom aufgenommen. Untermalt wird die Schnulze vom Guido Relly Orchestra.

Ab Track einundzwanzig wird es dann deutschsprachig! "Ich sprenge alle Ketten", im Übrigen komponiert von Giorgio Moroder und Michael Holm, wurde wahrscheinlich 1967 im Sonopress-Tonstudio in Berlin eingespielt. Den Song gibt es dann auch noch einmal auf Italienisch. (#28) Ansonsten treffen wir auf weitere deutschsprachige Lieder, alle aus 1968, sowie weitere in italienischer Sprache. Merkwürdig, der von Moroder und Hans Ulrich Weigel komponierte Song "Nachtexpress nach Nashville, Tennessee klingt im Thema doch verdammt stark nach "Peter Gunn" von Henri Mancini sowie ein wenig nach der Version der Remo Four, ansonsten im typischen Schlagergewand der Sechziger. Ja, und zuguterletzt entführt uns Ricky nach Chicago, ein schwülstiger Text über der Melodie des Songs, der von Elvis bekannt wurde. ("In The Ghetto") Alles in Allem interessant, aber auch bisweilen kurios."

The complete recordings of a key stretch in the career of European rocker Ricky Shayne – a singer who was born in Cairo, lived in Paris, then made a whole host of important 60s records on the Italian scene! Much of the work here resonates very strongly with English beat group material of the time, but has a slightly different vibe – as when Spanish or South American groups were taking on the same territory – in part because Ricky uses Italian vocals on most numbers, but also because the production styles are different, and do all sorts of key things to the guitars and organ lines that back up the vocals. The set also features some surprising German recordings from 1968 and 1969 too – a total of 30 tracks in all, with the usual very strong Bear Family packaging and detailed notes.
