Without him there would surely be no pop music in today's sense. With him it all began. He dusted off the music that had been offered to young people before him. At last there were songs with bite. It was high time someone like Elvis took the whole thing in hand. Through his immense influence on music history he consequently changed the development of the entire culture. Only with Elvis did a distinct youth culture begin. Clever managers suddenly discovered the huge potential that had previously been ignored. Until then, young people had always had to orient themselves by what was in vogue for adults. The development of youth culture did not, of course, remain without influence on culture as a whole – for suddenly it was chic to be young. Literature, music, fashion, the film industry, the mass media – everything was 'rejuvenated'. Elvis thus decisively influenced both music and cultural history. Long before it was acknowledged by the media, he had gone from cult figure to culture figure. But Elvis decisively influenced something else too – namely the generation that grew up with him. His generation – our generation. He shaped us. That is what this Graceland EXTRA No. 6 is about. Author Günter Mletzko – an EPG member from the very first hour – knows how to paint a mood picture of that time, the time when we were in our so-called 'Sturm und Drang' years and were completely into Elvis. Our generation felt like it was fighting a losing battle. We had long outgrown our childhood shoes; we did not want to slip into the worn-out shoes of the adults. Their world was not our world. Every attempt to make that world palatable to us was bound to fail. The economic miracle was blossoming and it gripped the older folk. The music was schmaltzy and boring, the lyrics saccharine to the point of dishonesty. In the cinema on the corner they showed high-gloss tearjerkers. Clothing was conservatively prim. We wanted none of it. We wanted something for us – something that suited our taste, that was fresh and alive, that freed us from our crouched, conformist existence, that was simply different. Then Elvis appeared with his music! Wow! No doubt – that was it! He thrilled us, and we followed him. At last we could express ourselves. This new feeling of freedom shaped our whole lives. Thus Elvis became a shaper of generations. Admiration for him became a firm standpoint with consequences; back then you couldn't be so completely neutral in your enthusiasm for him. How that unfolded in detail for the author of this issue of Graceland EXTRA, he describes vividly on the following pages. Those who lived through that time may perhaps recognise themselves in the descriptions, or at least remember how it was for them. Younger readers get a good insight into that era – the time when Elvis shaped his generation. This shaping of a whole generation was surely most intense among Elvis's own age group. Of course Elvis influenced or shaped several generations, but for our generation this shaping was more revolutionary; there had been nothing like it before. So 'Elvis, the shaper of generations' is also an interesting document of its time – for some a memory, for others information. Above all, though, it is a thank-you to Elvis, written with great respect, who gave us so much that was positive and who shaped our generation. There are few people of whom one can say that. This Graceland EXTRA too proves that Elvis was more than 'just a singer' – among other things, a shaper of generations.
