ELVIS LIVE was a force of nature. Anyone who was able to experience it once, or even several times, will confirm it. The emotional world of a person who went home unmoved from an Elvis concert must have been strangely constituted indeed. The stage was Elvis's true home; here he was in his element. He loved and needed his audience. Direct contact was extremely important to him; the audience spurred him to peak performances. From the moment he stepped onto the stage, Elvis had the concertgoers 'in his hand.' The famous spark leapt across before he even began to sing. What charisma! Other artists battle their way through half a concert until something catches fire. Elvis simply stood there, smiled, struck the first chord on the guitar, and the audience went wild. When he entered the stage you sensed at once: here comes a truly exceptional artist, the king of entertainment. ELVIS LIVE meant an unforgettable and thrilling experience. That remains palpable even in the 'canned' versions of his live appearances – on videocassettes, records, tapes and films, and visually on countless photos – but only as far as a recording can convey. Nothing will ever replace or match 'live.' And yet, with Elvis, even recordings often convey more 'live atmosphere' than many another artist ever manages on stage. ELVIS LIVE means a varied and mostly perfect programme, from 'Also sprach Zarathustra' to 'Can't Help Falling In Love' and the closing vamp. It includes rock songs, ballads, gospels, country and pop songs. Elvis performed everything with the appropriate feeling; nothing about him seemed forced – he lived what he was singing. Every kind of his music mattered to him and gave him joy, and that is exactly what you feel. When Elvis starts to rock, he does so with juice and power – you can't sit still. When he sings ballads, you grow thoughtful or begin to dream. In his gospel songs you feel his faith; for many, one of these Elvis songs was the first impulse on the path to God. He interprets country and pop songs superbly too – how often he turned other singers' songs into a typical Elvis song. All these styles Elvis fused, in his concerts, into a homogeneous whole.
