This superb set was recorded at the legendary Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island on the evening of fitly 19th 1969, within a week of the first moon landing and a month prior to Woodstock. Broadcast by PBS as 'The Sounds Of Summer' that November, it captures Mitchell on,.,the cusp of becoming one of the biggest stars in the emerging singer-songwriter movement.

Spanning early classics such as Chelsea Morning and The Circle Game, as well as lesser-known album tracks and the rare Cactus Tree, it culminates with Dino Valenti's authentic Get Together; and is essential listening for her legion of fans. It comes complete with background notes and rare images.

Amerikanische Folkrock-Sängerin. Wurde als Roberta Joan Anderson am 7.11.1943 in McLeod in der kanadischen Provinz Alberta geboren. Ihr Vater war Soldat bei der Luftwaffe. Ihre Mutter war Lehrerin und legte schon in frühester Kindheit viel Wert auf eine musische Erziehung. Nach der Schulzeit in Saskatoon und Saskatche-wan besuchte Joni Mitchell das Alberte College of Art in Calgary und studierte Malerei.

Als sie sich für Musik zu inter-essieren begann, erlernte sie erst die Ukulele, dann Gitarre und trat in einem kleinen Cafe „The Depression" auf. Ihr erster großer Auftritt beim Mariposa Folk-Festival in Ontario 1964 war das aus-lösende Ereignis in ihrer Karriere. Danach kehrte sie nicht mehr nach Hause zurück, begann Texte zu schreiben und zu kom-ponieren und verdiente sich ihren Le-bensunterhalt durch Auftritte in kleinen Clubs. Im Juni 1965 heiratete sie Chuck Mitchell und ging mit ihm nach Detroit, obwohl die Ehe nach kurzer Zeit geschie-
den wurde. Darüber singt sie in dem Song „I had a King" auf ihrer ersten LP „Songs to a Seagull", die 1968 erschien.

Von Detroit ging sie nach New York, lernte Judy Collins kennen, die ihren Song „Both Sides now" aufnahm und zu einem Hit machte. Das war auch für Joni Mitchell der Durchbruch. Seitdem gehört sie zu den erfolgreichsten und besten Folk-sängerinnen der Welt. 7 LPs sind bis jetzt von ihr erschienen.
