Blind Willie McTell: The Early Years 1927-1933 (LP, 180g Colored Vinyl, Ltd.)
(Yazoo) 14 tracks
Like so many other Delta blues musicians of the 1930s and 40s, rock music owes a debt of gratitude to the work of Blind Willie McTell. He is considered one of the best guitarists and singers of that era.
Artists and bands from The Allman Brothers, The White Stripes and Taj Mahal have cited the blind bluesman as a major influence.
From the beginning of his career in 1927, McTell recorded numerous singles for Victor Records and achieved considerable popularity in his native Atlanta, but like many of his contemporaries, his career stalled during World War II.
McTell left music in the 1950s and later died of a
Cerebral hemorrhage in 1959.
Not long after his death came the British blues explosion, which not only made Eric Clapton and John Mayall famous, but also sparked a new interest in the material of
classic bluesmen like McTell.
It wasn't long before countless collections of such material began to appear, including The Early Years, one of McTell's most productive periods, from 1927 to
1933.
The singles included in The Early Years, include numerous singles recorded for Victor
as well as for major Delta Blues labels such as Okeh, Vocalion, and Columbia.
Includes some of McTell's most enduring work, including his most famous,
"Statesboro Blues," which later became famous as a cover by the Allman Brothers, Taj Mahal, Deep Purple, and many others.
