John Mayall's Bluesbreakers

Als Eric Clapton die Yardbirds 1965 kurz nach ihrem Hit-Durchbruch For Your Love verließ, weil sie ihm zu sehr in Pop-Gefilde drifteten, fühlte er sich bald zum Paten der britischen Bluesszene, John Mayall, und seinen Bluesbreakers hingezogen.

Mayall wurde am 29. November 1933 in Macclesfield, Cheshire, geboren und von der umfangreichen Plattensammlung seines Vaters inspiriert. Er lernte über die Jahre Gitarre, Klavier und Mundharmonika, ging vier Jahre auf eine Kunsthochschule und war während des Koreakriegs in der Armee. 1962 spielte Mayall als Opener für Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated, und Korner nahm den Newcomer unter seine Fittiche. Anfang 1963 gründete Mayall, der inzwischen nach London gezogen war, seine erste Bluesbreakers-Besetzung. Mike Vernon, damals als junger Produzent bei Decca Records angestellt, leitete 1964 die Aufnahmen für ihre Debütsingle Crawling Up A Hill, von der 500 Exemplare verkauft wurden.

Nach mehreren Musikerwechseln stabilisierte sich Mayalls Rhythmusgruppe mit John McVie am Bass und Hughie Flint am Schlagzeug. Decca nahm noch im selben  Jahr die erste LP der Gruppe auf (ein Live-Set mit Roger Dean an der Gitarre und Mayall an Klavier und Bluesharp) sowie eine weitere Studiosingle, Crocodile Walk, bevor die Firma die Bluesbreakers entließ. Clapton stieß im April 1965 dazu, und Jimmy Page produzierte I'm Your Witchdoctor mit der neuen Besetzung für Immediate. Im April 1966 kamen die Bluesbreakers wieder mit Vernon zusammen, um eine komplette Studio-LP für Decca einzuspielen.

'Blues Breakers With Eric Clapton' war der Name dieser hochexplosiven Platte voller gut ausgewählter Coverversionen von US-Bluessongs (Clapton teilte Mayalls puristische Einstellung) plus ein paar eigener Titel, darunter Have You Heard, das Mayall über seine damalige Freundin Christine geschrieben hatte. Clapton war von einer Fender Telecaster auf eine Gibson Les Paul umgestiegen, nachdem er Freddy King auf einer LP-Hülle mit diesem Modell gesehen hatte, und jagte die Solidbody-E-Gitarre durch einen kraftvollen Marshall-Verstärker, was ihm eine gewisse Überlegenheit in puncto Lautstärke verschaffte. Alan Skidmores jazziges Tenorsaxofon eröffnet das langsame Have You Heard mit Mayall an der Orgel und als leidenschaftlichem Sänger; aber es ist Claptons zündende, von Freddy beeinflusste Leadgitarre, die den Titel befeuert.

Das Album war in Großbritannien ein Top-Erfolg und kam bis auf Platz 6. Dennoch verließ  Eric Mayall, um kurz nach der Veröffentlichung im Juli mit dem Bassisten Jack Bruce (zuvor auch mal ein Bluesbreaker) und dem Schlagzeuger Ginger Baker das Trio Cream zu gründen. Peter Green hatte früher schon eine Weile bei den Bluesbreakers gespielt und kam rechtzeitig zurück, um 1967 auf der nächsten LP der Band, 'A Hard Road', mitzuwirken. Als Green später im selben  Jahr aufhörte, um mit Drummer Mick Fleetwood die Band Fleetwood Mac zu formieren (McVie folgte bald nach), engagierte Mayall einen weiteren vielversprechenden jungen britischen Gitarristen: Mick Taylor. 

Mayall modernisierte seinen musikalischen Ansatz Ende der 60er-Jahre und experimentierte frei in ausgedehnten Jazzrock-Formaten. Anfang 1970 siedelte er nach Kalifornien über. Egal wo er gerade lebte – Mayall behielt sein unfehlbares Gespür für das Entdecken herausragender Musiker: Gitarrist Harvey Mandel und der E-Geiger Don 'Sugarcane' Harris standen in seiner ersten US-Band; über die Jahre stellte der weiterhin kontinuierlich aktive Mayall die Gitarren-Könner Coco Montoya, Walter Trout und Buddy Whittington einem breiteren Publikum vor.
