Remastered and extended by 4 bonus tracks version of the early 70s album of the Godfather of Ska, which was reissued here for the first time on vinyl with a total of 16 songs. In 1970 he had already established himself as the forefather of British reggae. In 1960 he moved to England and dominated the Jamaican music scene on the island from the very beginning. After eleven years of consistent success on every major Caribbean label, he was no longer satisfied with his success and began to look for new challenges. So he took the unusual step of transferring the distribution of his latest recordings to mainland Europe and North America. For British fans, the battle began for the few copies of the album originally released on the Belgian label Hebra that were available via export.

Laurel Aitken

Laurel Aitken wurde am 22. April 1927 unter dem Namen Lorenzo Aitken auf Kuba geboren. Der britische Label-Chef Gaz Mayall verpasste ihm Mitte der 80er Jahre den Titel ‚Godfather of Ska’ – vollkommen zu Recht, gilt er doch als einer der Begründer der Ska Musik auf Jamaica. Dorthin, nach West Kingston, zog es die Aitken-Familie 1938.

Dort kam er über US-Radiostationen mit dem seinerzeit populären Rhythm ’n’ Blues aus New Orleans in Berührung. Zu seinen Favoriten zählten Smiley Lewis, Louis Jordan und Amos Milburn. Die Kombination aus den coolen Sounds aus New Orleans mit karibischem Calypso bildete die Grundlage für jenen eigenen Stil, der als Ska die Welt erorbern sollte. Zunächst jedoch arbeitete Aitken für das Jamaican Tourist Board und trat als Entertainer in Nachtclubs auf. Nach ersten Aufnahmen produzierte der 1937 in London geborene spätere Gründer von Island Records, Chris Blackwell, Boogie in My Bones b/w Little Sheila, die erste Pop-Produktion aus Jamaica, die auch in England veröffentlicht wurde.

1960 zog Aitken nach Brixton in London und nahm in der nächsten Zeit 15 Singles für das ‚Blue Beat’ Label auf, bevor er 1963 nach Jamaica zurückkehrte. Mit den Skatallites als Begleitband machte er dort weitere Aufnahmen, um dann wieder nach Großbritannien zurückzukehren, wo er seine Position als einer führenden Ska-Musiker weiter festigen konnte. Neben den karibischen Bewohnern Londons hatte er besonders bei Mods, Skinheads und anderen Ska-Fans Erfolg.
Von den späten 50er Jahren bis in die Siebzigerjahre hinein konnte Aitken international eine Vielzahl von Hits landen. 1970 Liess er sich zusammen mit seiner Frau im englischen Leicester nieder und trat seltener auf. 1980 erlebte Ska eine Renaissance, und schließlich kam er erstmals mit einem Song (Rudi Got Married) in die britischen Single-Charts.

Am 17. Juli 2005 starb Laurel Aitken in seiner Wahlheimat Leicester an den Folgen eines Herzinfarkts. Er bleibt in Erinnerung als jener Künstler, der Mento/Calypso, R&B, Ska, Rock Steady und Reggae zu seinem eigenen Ding gemacht hat.
