Singers and songwriters Kate and Anna McGarrigle (born in Montreal of mixed English and French-Canadian backgrounds and raised in the village of Saint-Sauveur-des-Monts in the Laurentian Mountains, Quebec) set standards primarily with their dreamlike vocal harmonies. Their debut album "Kate & Anna McGarrigle" (1975) was critically acclaimed and became a classic. The duo's most successful records also include "Dancer With Bruised Knees" (1977), "French Record"(1981) and "Heartbeats Accelerating" (1990). Two other albums from the 1990s, "Matapedia" and "The McGarrigle Hour," each won the Juno, the Canadian equivalent of the Grammy.

The ballad "Heart Like A Wheel" was the title track of Linda Ronstadt's 1974 album. The Pet Shop Boys, Emmylou Harris, Billy Bragg, Elvis Costello, The Corrs and many others covered songs by the two Canadian sisters over the years. They have also made guest appearances on albums by Emmylou Harris, Richard & Linda Thompson, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Joan Baez, The Chieftains and Marianne Faithfull, among others.

Kate and Anna have composed music for several film and television productions In 1994 they were awarded the Order of Canada.

In 2010, Kate McGarrigle died at the age of 63 from Sarcoma, a rare type of cancer. Before that, the sisters had still established a foundation to research and fight this type of cancer, from which Kate suffered since 2006.

On Monday, April 22, 2005, Kate and Anna McGarrigle performed at Radio Bremen's Sendesaal. Anna recalls, "Our second French album "La vache qui pleure" had just been released in Europe and we were touring to promote it. At that time our band consisted of Kate and me, with Joel Zifkin (violin) and Michel Pépin (guitar and bass), drummer Thom Gossage and my wonderful daughter Lily Lanken. I hope you enjoy our music.
