GERMAN ALL STARS: Deutsches Jazz Festival 1953, Frankfurt
The German Jazz Festival in Frankfurt/Main is the oldest jazz festival still running - older even than Newport. Although it started in 1951, the first 'official' festival was in 1953 and Telefunken recorded it that year and issued some of the concert on a 10' LP. An all-star German band was assembled, including Hans (James) Last on bass and pianist Paul Kuhn. Max Greger, who led a big band for 30 years, is here, as is trombonist Günther Fulisch who led the NDR dance band in Hamburg for 25 years. Saxophonist Delle Haensch later became a successful record producer. Others on the sessions include Fred Bunge on trumpet,
Franz von Klenck on alto sax, Gerd Hühns on guitar, and Teddy Paris on drums. The songs include standards (Talk Of The Town, The Man I Love, etc.) and two originals. The set is rounded out with a studio recording. A rare and exciting document of German jazz.
