Joe Ely Driven To Drive (CD)

Country singer-songwriter Joe Ely has announced his new album, »Driven to Drive«, for summer 2024. The LP will be led by a new song with Bruce Springsteen, »Odds of the Blues«.

Ely and Springsteen have performed together sporadically since the early 1990s. In 1995, Ely recruited Springsteen as a singer for two Letter to Laredo tracks, “All Just to Get to You” and “I'm a Thousand Miles From Home”.

Regarding the new song, Ely said in a press release:
"I got the idea for the song while hanging out at a nightclub on the outskirts of East Lubbock called TV's.... There was always a dice game in the back room, the pool table had a bad tilt, and the jukebox played mostly old blues songs. I later wrote the song when I set up my studio in Austin. I recently asked Bruce if he would like to sing with me on this song, and he said he would love to. We have been friends for a long time. One of my memories of singing with him was in Dublin, Ireland, when we were both on stage with Jerry Lee Lewis and Shane MacGowan singing 'Great Balls of Fire'.”

In dieser Zeit entwickelte er jenen Stil, der für dieTexas Outlaws wie Jerry Jeff Walker, Butch Hancock oderauch Waylon Jennings so typisch war und oft unter demNamen „Southern Rock“, „Redneck Rock“ oder auch kurz„Outlaw Music“ verkauft wurde. Auch mit jenem fast sagenumwobenen Jimmie Dale Gilmore hat Joe Ely musiziertund er war es auch der,bei jenen Aufnahmen für Plantationmitgesungen und Dobro gespielt hat zusammen mit Gilmore, Butch Hancock, Tommy Hancock, Sylvester Riceund Steve Wesson an der Singenden Säge. Dann kam 1975der Vertrag mit MCA und im Verlauf der nächsten Jahre einpaar großartige L.P.s, nur die Hits, die stellten sich nicht einund aus der Texas Music Szene ist inzwischen der Dampfohnehin raus. Joe Ely scheint seine Chance verpasst zuhaben.
