geb. 9. 2. 1947 in Amarillo - TexasRecord Labels: MCAErster Hit: All My Love (1977)Joe Ely, in früher Jugend von Jimmie Rodgers und RobertJohnson beeinflusst, ist ein Sänger, der sich viele Jahre langmit allen möglichen Jobs durchs Leben geschlagen hat. Erarbeitete bei einem Zirkus, pflückte Obst in New Mexicound war Tellerwäscher. Dazwischen spielte er immer wieder Gitarre in den verschiedensten Bands, bis er sich derBand von Butch Hancock anschloss und mit auf Tourneeging. In dieser Zeit entwickelte er jenen Stil, der für dieTexas Outlaws wie Jerry Jeff Walker, Butch Hancock oderauch Waylon Jennings so typisch war und oft unter demNamen „Southern Rock“, „Redneck Rock“ oder auch kurz„Outlaw Music“ verkauft wurde. Auch mit jenem fast sagenumwobenen Jimmie Dale Gilmore hat Joe Ely musiziertund er war es auch der,bei jenen Aufnahmen für Plantationmitgesungen und Dobro gespielt hat zusammen mit Gilmore, Butch Hancock, Tommy Hancock, Sylvester Riceund Steve Wesson an der Singenden Säge. Dann kam 1975der Vertrag mit MCA und im Verlauf der nächsten Jahre einpaar großartige L.P.s, nur die Hits, die stellten sich nicht einund aus der Texas Music Szene ist inzwischen der Dampfohnehin raus. Joe Ely scheint seine Chance verpasst zuhaben.
