The singer Serge Jaroff (born on 20.03.1896 in Makarjew) founded at the beginning of 1921 in a prisoner of war camp in Turkey, where many Don Cossacks from the Russian army were interned, the Don Cossacks Choir.
The repertoire of the choir consisted mainly of Russian church music, Russian folk music and folklore. From 1923 the choir also gave guest performances in Western Europe. In the 30's the choir undertook its concert tours from the base in Berlin. During a US tour the Don Kosken Choir was surprised by the outbreak of war in 1939.
The choir singers took American citizenship and chose New York as their new base.

In addition to its numerous guest appearances, the choir regularly released singles and LPs, which included Russian folk songs as well as Christmas carols and German folk songs. In 1979 the Don Cossack Choir gave the last concert in Europe on the occasion of Serge Jaroff's 83rd birthday.
