Rainer E. Lotz mit Michael Gunrem und Stephan Puille: Das Bilderlexikon der deutschen Schellack-Schallplatten (5 Bände) - The German Record Label Book
The German Record Label Book – Picture Encyclopaedia of German Shellac Records (5 Volumes)
Rainer E. Lotz with Michael Gunrem and Stephan Puille
There are books – and there are reference works. This is the latter.
With The German Record Label Book, Rainer E. Lotz, Michael Gunrem and Stephan Puille present the most comprehensive documentation ever published on the history of German shellac record production. Spanning five large-format volumes, 2,288 pages and more than 13,000 full-colour illustrations, this monumental work sets a new, unchallenged benchmark.
Germany was the industrial heart of early record manufacturing. From German pressing plants, records were produced not only for the domestic market but for the entire world. This encyclopaedia reflects that reality consistently and without compromise: it documents all known German record labels, including countless rare, short-lived and previously undocumented brands – regardless of where the records were ultimately sold.
This is not a discography. There are no catalogue reconstructions. Instead, it is exactly what the title promises: a picture encyclopaedia. Each label is presented in a standardized, systematic format, including information on ownership, repertoire, licensing relationships, catalogue series and production background – accompanied by illustrations of every known label design and variation.
Beyond classical shellac records, the work also covers tone postcards, picture discs, advertising and contract pressings, flexi-discs, self-recorded discs, talking doll records and many other special formats. Even registered but apparently never issued “phantom labels” are documented with trademark evidence.
Entries range from concise notices on obscure brands to extensive in-depth studies. The chapter on Telefunken alone spans 44 pages with 75 label illustrations, supplemented by record sleeves, trademark registrations and additional archival material. For major labels, Lotz provides approximate datings of catalogue series and, crucially, keys to matrix number sequences, allowing collectors and archivists to identify recording origins with unprecedented precision.
Despite its scholarly depth, the work remains highly usable. Every entry follows the same clear structure. The text is in German, but the consistency of presentation makes the core information accessible to an international audience. Volume 5 includes extensive addenda – a candid reminder that discographical research is never truly complete.
This five-volume set is published in a strictly limited edition and is available only as a complete set. For collectors, archives, libraries, museums, broadcasters and research institutions, this is not a luxury item but an essential foundation.
Anyone working seriously with shellac records without this book is working with an incomplete toolkit.

This massive picture book of German shellac records is hardly susceptible to a conventional review.
They are to be found under Anonym-[Grammophon] (Deutschlandsender), along with other issues with different logos. 'Lyra' also has no cross-reference. This is both a book to dip into and delight in, and a very significant work of reference which will answer most questions about the German recording indus-try and its products. Howard Rye

This work is amazing!
This work is amazing! We are already using it for nearly every single question we face related to our historical discography. It is so clearly presented (even if written in German, which only eriches us culturaly a bit more), so nice to take it and find out chronologies, schemes, excellent pictures...
It is also a primary tool to document information other than the audio content (sleeves, stamps, labels, pressings...), which is a matter of great interest for both our users and ourselves.
Grandios
